My car was broken into last night.  I thought all they got was a few bucks and a bag, but it might be much more.  I can't find a set of keys that have both remote and keys to our two cars and the house.  I just had the house locks changed, but not sure about the cars.

What's the most cost effective way to go?  New remote and door locks?  Or new ignition and door locks?

Dealer or mobile locksmith?  If so, can anyone recommend a good mobile?

thanks,
Nate

most cost effective way is to make 100000% sure your keys were stolen at your house.
we were burgled and they took my truck keys ('02 Dakota) and house keys.  changing the house lock was so easy and cheap, then the truck was about $700 for new door lock cores, new ignition core, one new remote and reprogramming the whole shebang.

Just wondering, do you keep a extra set of keys to All of what you stated in said car? Or did they get in your house? If you keep them in the car, my next question would be who does this?

We have that set of keys (my car, wife's car, house door) as the master/extra set of keys that either my wife or I can use in case we can't find our own.  It's made up of each of our spares and a single house key.  It's rarely used and is always in it's place.  Last weekend we were in a rush to leave and not realizing I already had keys in one of my pockets, I grabbed those keys on the way out.  When I got in the car and felt my original set of keys I put the master down as they were bulky and not comfortable in a pocket.  Guess they were forgotten in the car.

In talking to other parents at the schools, it seems the thieves had a busy night as several people reported similar break-ins.  One guy said his neighbor's house was broken into and his security cameras captured images of young men walking across the street at 3am.  Cops said the young men were from East Palo Alto.  I guess this is a regular occurrence.

Anyways, my insurance will cover it.

That sucks big time bro. Burglary seems to be happening more frequently everywhere. After we got burglarized at my moms old house, we adopted a dog plus had an alarm put in. Hopefully the thieves doesn't come back for your cars.

I'd check your home owners and see how much the keys and remote replacement it the programing of remotes can run over 100.00 plus the price of remote. I can't tell you what to say about a deductible. I had a agent one time who told me what to say when filing a report.

If the cops could somehow recover your keys from these thieves, that would be the best solution.  They obviously know who they are, it seems.   make sure your theft policy on the car is up to snuff.  If it is stolen, you're covered.
I wouldn't go through the trouble and expense of re-key of the car or the alarm system on the car.  I'd spend that money on a home alarm system.

I agree with Skipro3. I think you may as well when you see the cost. My home owners paid for a computer that was taken from my car. Plus 200.00 dollars in cash.
