On a whim picked up some (dead) baby octopus from my local asian market when I was getting a 3lb box of frozen squid ($10, did I get ripped off or typical?). Anyways, anyone ever use for rockfish/cabs/lings? I figure they should go over pretty well for cabs and lings at least. Ideas to rig it? Just like a whole squid?

I've used em when a fish I have caught has puked them up. Just pinned it on the lure/swimbait and dropped it back down.

Works good!!

that must have been last year....I think the 2012 BigJim now eats fish puke!

$10 for three lbs is a bit steep but not crazy. I think I have seen it for $7-8. I usually buy fresh and then freeze it in small ziplocks with 5-7 squid in each bag. Just enough for a day of RF fishing.

Puked up octopus work great....but I've never even had a bite on the bottled ones from the baitshop or the fresh dead ones from the Asian Market.

BTW - Those three pound boxes of squid were $3.99 at Safeway like 5 years ago, then they went to $5.99 a few years back, and now they are $8.99. More than doubled in the last few years. WTF?

My local Asian market has the 3lb boxes for $5.99....and that's up from $3.99 two years ago....

I've gotten some fish on store bought baby octopus but for the most part not much, On the other hand puked up octopi seems to be the best bait around.

Yea, my local ranch 99 has the 3lb boxes for $4.99.  I remember last year, they had the 5lb boxes for this price, but now they only have the 3lb box at this price.

Even the fresh dead squid was only $2.20/lb...so $10 for a box does sound a bit steep.

But that octopus should work well for ya!

Consider the squid are being bought for $60.00 a ton. Not a bad profit. The commercial guys take it in the shorts and so do the consumer. Ah Corporate America.  LOL

Never, ever, EVER caught a fish off the store bought octopu$$y; but had good success with the ones puked out....

It may seem that way but not necessarily true.
In 2010 in Monterey Bay alone, there was over 49 million lbs harvested at a total market value of $10.6 million. That means they were getting like $.25/lb at market! Which is crazy high. And the reason why they keep increasing the cost of squid in stores.

Figured it was a bit much, but can't beat the convenience of a neighborhood store sometimes.

About the 'pus, maybe I'll try soaking them in RF guts before use...see if that helps  :smt044

Cabs will hit the frozen octopus. Haven't caught too many other RF with 'em.

Caught , Lings, Cabs Rockfish on it. I shove a jig head in the hood, then poke small hole in hood, tie on or use a strong swivel for connection and ease of use with the next Oct. Bang the bottom like usual.
