Ok guys. I apologize in advance for all the rookie questions.  I am getting my Tarpon all rigged up. I have my Fishfinder in place Scotty mounts and rod holders setup and I have been enjoying some striper fishing on the Napa river. That said I am thinking of going up to Berryessa this weekend to target some trout. Being summer and all would it be in my best interest to buy a Scotty lake troller so I can get some depth, or is there a chance  In hell of catching some keepers just slow trolling on a weighted line? Any tips or feedback would be much appreciated!

Best,
Phil

Last month in hotter weather I was catching trout while Koke trolling from 30-80'. Also saw them on the surface all over which surprised me. I would say try in the 20-50' range however you can get there. Bright lures or flashers and worms I would recommend. Reds, greens, blues. Did not matter when I was there. Good luck and post up soe pics.

Thanks. Trying to firm up the day. Think I will give it a try without the downrigger. If it does not go well I will pick one up next week.

Sounds like you got a nice rig goin post up some pics :smt006You may wanna try a diver such as a deep six or dipsy diver to get some depth if needed good luck brother hope to see some fish porn (and from what I've been told on the divers it's about 1/3 of the line out to depth ex 300ft out = about 100 ft of depth)

you should pick up a couple troll ease's they're cheap and you just add weight to them to go deeper.

The scotty laketroller is a really nice little downrigger, I have one on my outback, and would never go back to leadcore or divers or anything.  Just remember sh!tcan the stainless cable and replace it with braid... I can not recommend that highly enough... soooo much better.

Lake troller for sure. Nice DR.  You will probably not need it for awhile. There is a ton of surface activity now. Would like to hook up with you for trout up here and Stripers on the river.  Was catching marauding small mouth on down rigger. (Thirty feet of cable out)

Definitely ditch the cable on the downrigger. Braided line is the way to go. I also cut a few inches off the line & re-tie the weight connection every few trips just to keep it secure. Not sure if it matters, maybe just a little piece of mind I suppose.

Thanks Guys. I ended up picking up a laketroller and setting it up with braid but I have not had a chance to put it to work. I have been a bit tied up with duck season and some crabbing. I am hitting the river for striper on Thursday night if anyone is interested. If my plans fall through for a turkey hunt Sunday I may take a run at some Berryessa action. Between hunting and fishing there is so
much going on right now it's sure hard to stay focused on work!

Would someone be kind enough to post a picture of the Lake Troller setup?  Especially on a paddle powered yak.  I am thinking about picking one up, but am trying to determine the best way to setup and use.

Thanks!

I use a big Jon clamped on to my crate .The lake troller with the clamp mount would work the same .I know the laketroll has other mounting options like a Scotty mount but I didn't want to drill .A shuttle hawk by Shasta tackle is a must for me
