Hey guys and gals, I picked up a Tribe 13.5 by Perception the other day for the gf and I to paddle around local lakes/bays on.  First day on it we went to Del Valle in Livermore and I brought along my LMB setup to mess around with.  Despite not catching anything after a hour or so, I realized that I subconsciously bought this thing to use for fishing.  That was my third time ever in a kayak and I'm hooked.  I come from shore/boat bass fishing background, but want to expand my horizons greatly.

I googled "Tribe 13.5 fishing" and came up with a bigwatersedge.com thread of that guys rad looking tribe; http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/showthread.php?t=11748

Now I know I don't need that extreme of a setup, but it definitely got the gears going.

My question for all of you; what are the top 3 additions I will need to get my yak ready for fishing?  I intend to fish fresh (LMB, SMB, trout, kokanee) and at some point start hitting the salt around SC or HMB (I'm in the far east bay).

I'd love to hear suggestions and tips.  I read through several pages of the "General fishing tips" forum and am already learning.  Would love to meet up and actually fish with some people in the upcoming weeks, just gotta get all the proper gear if I'm heading out into salt.

Thanks in advance!

I almost never fish freshwater, ocean is my home waters.  For the salt, I would say radio, GPS and rod holder in that order.

Tandems are hard to rig. Snapperhead and I live in the tri-valley and have rigged tandems so feel free to PM us. The easiest temporary/permanent solution is to install a crate in between the 2 seats and install the rod holders and fish finder to the crate as well as storage.  Snapperhead had a really cool crate system. If you search the site you will find pictures,

Welcome bro... I am fairly new to kayak fishing myself and to be honest, the first things I purchased were all my safety gear and cold water clothing. Since I already had tackle and rods I figured safety came first. And jus like u I wanted to expand my horizon to the ocean too... There is safety thread on the site for newbs like us... Very informative.

Im a noob too. :smt006 My vote is for safety gear first. Dress for immersion. Get a VHF radio.

My background is similar to yours, mainly fishing for bass and stripers with an occasional salmon trip all in fresh water.  I value my rod holders and crate more than any other additions. A fish finder is not far behind, but you will find that it's not nearly as important for finding bass on the yak as it is on a boat.

I would say a comfortable PFD and then rod holders.....You can really wait on a FF or even a VHF radio if you plan on staying in FW to get comfortable with the yak.  Del Valley, Shadow Cliffs, Lafayette are all good places to get comfortable

Okay... mine is a little on the EXTREME side; here's the link to mine: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=32622.0

Here's the one I did for Chaeki: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=30593.0

Seriously, give a hollow if you have any questions! Get it ready fast, Tiki Lagun event is just around the corner, great place to test it out!

Thanks for the tips everyone!  I think I'm holding off on the FF for the time being as my budget is really limited.  Going to get a milk crate and a GPS to hold me over in the freshwater.  Also looking into getting the proper attire so I dont freeze or bake my arse off.

:smt007 WOW.  This is pretty much exactly as far in as I'd like to go when my setup is finished.  I couldn't figure out what the "noodle" cutout was for until I watched the vid.  I'm looking at my tribe and don't really see any places to put a hatch  :smt009

I'm taking it out to shadow cliffs today (4 miles from my house) to try it out with a buddy.  Looking for a milk crate to get me started on my budget.

I will definitely
