Andy (KickinBass) and I took a short trip to Fort Bragg this morning. The weather was great, but the fog was playing tricks on us by rolling in and out. We hooked up with some guys from work who were camping at Mackrricher State Park. Two of them had kayak's too, so we decided to launch right from the beach. I was a little apprehensive at first since this was my first time in my new kayak and my first time on a kayak in the ocean. By the way, the ocean is nothing like Lake Mendo!

Anyway, the launch went smooth as a baby's butt. The visibility was great and I could see the bottom in about 20 feet of water. As we paddled out Andy started fishing for SALMON, but hooked a Ling about 30 seconds after his line went in. OOPS! After unhooking the nice 27" ling, we continued paddling until we got to the spot.

I finished suiting up and went in. I must confess that I haven't been Ab diving in about 5 years, since I moved from Fort Bragg to Ukiah. The first dive was just for looking. Lots of plump 7 1/2 to 8" Ab's. With the next three dives I had my limit, which was good for Andy since he sold his dive gear and needed mine to get his Ab's.  Andy finished fishing for SALMON without any luck, I guess the rock fish were too stingy. Andy sported the borrowed gear and got his Ab's. Then it was back to the beach for a couple of cold ones. What I great day. Right now he's on his way over to partake on our bounty of Ab's and some Mahi mahi taco's. Mmmm Mmmm Good!

Thanks again Sean! I LOVE MY NEW BOAT....The Mahi mahi.

question?  If a "Friend"  was "salmon" fishing and happened to catch 2 lings, 3 china cod looking things, and a verm. is that okay, as long as he let them all go....

I guess I should just ask.  Even though the season isnt open yet, can you fish for rocks, and lings?

WOW a 3mm suit makes it a tad bit cooler than my old 7mm.  this was the 1st time ab diving in almost 10 years.  It was great, lots of lings swimin around.   OH on a side note, I loaned my old town loon to a "Friend" because he went camping at Lake Pilsbury.  When it returned it looked like he pulled it behind his truck the whole lenght of the county road.   What a @$%*!)%^$()#@($$*I#(@*%%*$*#.........

nice day you had there! we were at fort ross for abalone and it was coldddd!!

as for the fishing. incidental catch happens often and assuming it was not on purpose it whould be ok. the dfg should know better. however, if you have fishing gear decked with bottom jigs and rigged for bottom fishing they can bust you for that. if they see you accidentally caught a ling on a salmon rig its no biggie. but fishing out of season technically is forbidden. on a bad boring day they might nitpick. depends on their mood i think. i have never known of anyone getting caught or harassed for this.

gonna give it a go?

john

I can go if I'm back in Ukiah by 1:00 PM. I have to work the Redwood motorcycle run in Piercy that afternoon, so it will have to be an early quick trip for me. Plus it's the taste of downtown in Ukiah the night before....with all that wine. I may be in trouble.

CHEERS!

I gotta be QUICK TOO, These damm kids have a thing called Graduation?  from preschool...  Did they not know its salmon season.  This will require the ultimate WAF  (is this the right context sean?)

It will require a LOT of WAF.  We go a lot so if this Sat. is no good there is always next week.

Damn I was hoping to make the taste this year after talking to Leah it sounds like a blast. My daughter will be graduating HS this weekend so my weekend is full up.
