I had some time to burn before I picked up my boy from school in Redwood city.
So I stopped in a shop to have a look see at what I might could use. No greeting as I walked in and started walking around ( no big deal, might be busy in the back), I did notice a gal kinda wandering around the counter looking sleepy.
I head toward the back an started checking out a T-15 and noticed a battery bag up under the front. Cool I think I could use that.
Finally finish my rounds and make it back to the front . Gal from before is oozing ' rather be a 1000 other places' face. Is looking at me blankly and made me engage her. " hi, that T-15 on the floor there, has a battery bag, do you know where I can get one or who makes it?
Guy from the back- "it comes from the kayak maker"
Blank stare Gal - " it comes from the kayak maker"
Awkward silence happens,  " um.. Ok. " I say then turn and walk out.
If they don't want customers bothering them with trying to buy something...that's a sure fire way to do it.
Every other Friday I practically drive right by, which I'll just keep right on doing....

Rant over.
- Joe

Take it easy - I share your pain - been there many times (especially on dealerships)

Customer service is very important factor for business in our days. Company  I work for propagates  "save the world from Bad Customer Service" - good CS is very rear and hard to meet. Maybe that's why I drove about from San Francisco to Lodi to pick up my kayak from Dan and Viktor at Headwaters Kayak. My business with them was so flawless that even my wife was surprised.

ditto...I felt the same way dealing with CCK. Keith replied to email and calls right away. In the world of the internet you can almost ALWAYS find it cheaper. Buying local only matters to me if they earn the sale with good service. I can be treated like a number (IP number) over the internet.

And keep in mind that most shops will take your feedback seriously and put in place some sort of corrective action.  They have to, or they won't survive.  If you feel compelled to bring it up here, I encourage you to bring it up directly with them too.

Any of you old timers remember when a certain Sacramento shop had a bad rep here?  Look at them these days, mostly good feedback on them now.

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

If the girl was beach bunny hot, then she was doing what she was hired to do.  Pretty common stuff in the retail sporting industry.

really, the only thing that separates retail establishments is customer service. The products are all pretty much the same. Good customer service is where the long term money is.

I rented a cabin on the Trinity river last week as part of our vacation, and when we arrived the owners weren't there to greet us, but had left a nice introduction note, the key, fresh flowers in a vase and a big sack of ice for the beers we had brought. I pointed out to them later how every person I mentioned this to replied "now that's good service"

I dont know if they sell it separately.

if true, that's retardudd.

Not the fact that you don't know.  But the fact that OK don't sell the separate desirable accessory.  Shirley, no rashunull consumer wood buy a whole kayak just for the battree bag.
