What an incredible story - as a kayaker, I couldn't imagine going out on a boat without life-vests or a radio - and to think these folks fish daily on the waters of S.Alaska - I'm assuming are much more turbulent than our coast here off CA - seems like a small price to pay for a couple of staple items... forget the sharks, I'd be more worried about freezing to death/hypothermia... 'rudolph the red-nosed reindeer' indeed...
