So I upgraded to the sailing rudder.  Makes a big difference.   After second trip I noticed a chunk out of the edge of it.  :smt009 I know I didnt hit anything.  Turns out when you stow the rudder it can hit the bungy cleat on left side.  Possible solution would be to switch the bungy mounts.  Looks like you need a spanner to remove the right side.  Anyone else encounter this?

Mine will occasionally wedge itself into that cleat, making it difficult to redeploy without knocking it loose with my paddle of something.  It is just a coincidence when it happens though... I have to stow it with the tiller handle juuuuust so it order for it to happen.  Now, as far as damaging the rudder, I find it difficult to believe it could have hit it that hard under normal circumstances.  Any chance it happened during transport?  I could imagine freeway wind speeds swinging it around with sufficient force to do that sort of damage if the rudder wasn't properly secured.

Mine is an '08 and his article says 2012 so they are both twist and stow... or should be.

Mines an '11 but the rudder isn't twist & stow.  Large shark fin that rotates up (doesn't lay flat on the deck when stowed).  Have no idea if this is the GOOD or BAD design of rudder.  Looks ROBUST & looks like it will make this thing turn on a dime.  Hope to dunk the yak for the first time in a week or so.

Is yours an outback?  I had no idea they went away from the twist and stow.  My wife's is a '10 and it still had it.

Oh wait, are you an AI guy?  those have the kickup rudder.  The outbacks according to hobies site still feature the twist and stow.

Yea you need a key for the fittings. They can easily be switched out or replaced with other styles, pad eye, bungee, or cleat.

Here's what it looks like. You can get just the key or the kit. Always a good thing to keep around. I have both in stock in Redding and any hobie dealer will be able to get you one.

I did get the spanner and switched bungee to other side.  Worked magic! But I will carry the notch created by the cleat until I need a new rudder.
