Is everybody who is having this problem using turbo fin upgrades?  My 2012 (with stock fins) has not had this problem yet, but hearing this is concerning.
I was under the impression from Hobie that all 2012 models came with Turbo Fins?

Has anyone experiencing the noise on the mirage drive checked their idler pully?  The round pully thing on the front of the mirage drive?  I just found that one of mine on my Outback's mirage drive is busted in two places.  One is on the outter rim, where the cable is routed.  And the other is through the middle, the center of the pully is busted.  Looks like a cheap part to replace, and another excuse to order something from ACK  :smt044

After replacing my pedal shafts, I wanted to say that the bolt on the side, which connects the pedal shaft's to the rest of the mirage drive, could not possibly be the cause of any knocking sound.  It just doesn't move at all, so cant be related to the clunking noise.

It's not the bolt itself, but rather the tension it puts on the shafts.  That bolt is meant to be left a little less than tight in order to allow for adjustments to the pedals.  If they are too loose however, the pedal shafts themselves can be a little sloppy which can create some sounds.

Not according to their website.  For instance, if you look at the PA14 it says it comes with the mirage drive w/turbo fins.  If you check the outback it simple states it comes with the mirage drive.  No mention of turbo fins.

It was my understanding that the PA was the only one that comes with turbo fins.  It needs extra "uumph" to push that beast.  :smt044

They really should do away with standard fins! I cant believe that I waited so long on my OB to upgrade them.  Really, if your still using standard fins, you must upgrade!!! :smt002

+1 but I'm sure there are plenty of people that buy kayaks that only use them a couple times a year & for them the standard fins & rudder are probably just fine.

Getting back to the original post I've been getting better about thoroughly hosing off the drive to remove any last spec of dust, algae, etc & generously spraying silicone on the chains & around the mainshaft, pulley shaft, & fin shafts everytime I get home. I also make sure the little pieces of tubing are still on the drive where it seats into the drive well. By increasing the level of my maintenance I've noticed the drive is staying quiet now.
