A few weeks ago I posted up a request for tips on a haliboat out of Homer. Well I got some info and a request from Jim for lots of pics.

I gotta confess that I don't suffer the madness to the extent that some of you all do. So, while I was up for an all day full blown Rock/Ling/Salmon/Hali combo trip, it wasn't too hard to talk me into sleeping in and doing a half day trip to go catch a bunch of "chickens".

We were asked to keep track of our total catches for ADFG records, I know I caught 9 before I stopped fishing to take pics and BS with others.  It's not like anything you'd experience in Ca. the people who did fish to whole time caught between 10-14 each. These fish were between 14-20 pounds with an occasional 25 pounder. The limit is 2 but since the survival rate for released halis under these circumstances is very high you're allowed to C&R all you want.

I'll stop here and just put up some pics,  I also have some phenomenal (by Ca standards) salmon spawning pics but I'll put that up some other day.

Pics:

my first fish heading to the box,
keeping 'em in the water waiting for the deckhand,

Way to go one the Homer trip. I have a group of twelve guys heading up next July for our bi-annual trip. I'm spending 3 days in Seward trying to fill a freezer, then down to the lodge for a week of hardcore fishing. The goal for next year is to come back with 1400 pounds of fish between us all. We did half of that with six guys last time so it is doable.

I still need to get a hundred plus pound halibut. I've hooked up with 3 the past three times and they either broke the line or spit the bait out. Tryign to get one is not as fun as catchin and releasing chickens but when you hang into one is is one hell of a load.

Nice pics Dale. Norseman and I were up at Homer a few years ago and it was fun. We stayed overnight on a friends boat by Elizabeth Is. We pulled 6 limits off there up to about 65 lbs. Seeing the puffins flying around is so cool. Did you get over to Seward? That place is fantastic. 8 days in a rented 4WD truck with a cabover on it. Cheap.

We did 14 nights in an RV rental, did all the basics, landed in Anchorage shopped for provisions then got outta town, Denali, Kenai River, Homer, Seward, Portage Valley camping, Fijord Tours, Glaciers, Bears, Moose, Caribou, whales, porpoise, salmon, halibut, and yeah the puffins are cool little birds.  And it was less than I expected.
