Hey guys Im thinking of incorporating snap and barrel swivels into jewlry pieces. Only thing is there is that lead warning label on the back. Are swivels really made with lead or is that a warning that has to go on all fishing gear in CA? Im looking at the mustad and south bend brands to use. Would wearing something like a necklace be a problem with the potential cancer causing chemicals? thanks for your time!

It's likely they put that warning on there because of the lead in the solder used to assemble those products.  I just read an interesting article about the lead-free initiatives that stated lead, in the state of solder or solid lead, doesn't pose nearly as much of a health risk as we are being lead to believe.

How many lead split shots did we bite as kids....Oh wait has that been the problem all these years.  :smt044

If your worried about the warnings head over to your local craft store and they sell clasps & swivels made specifically for jewelry. They are only a couple bucks a like a 5-10 pack.

Why not go stainless? As long as there is no solder used, and unpainted, it should be lead free.

Go you your nearest "big box" hardware retailer and you are likely to see a Prop 65 warning regaring the health risks possibly associated with lumber (treated, glued, or otherwise).  Life should come with a Prop 65 warning.  "caution, the life you are about to live may cause cancer"

In California it is mandated to add a warning to all items with trace amounts of lead.
If you look closely, you will see a warning on most metal items in Cali.
In the tackle industry, it is under extrem scrutiny .... we have to label almost everything as well as having signs posted around the store.
Funny thing is it is only harmful to you in California ...... according to the warning ;-)

Im thinking its the same idea as peanut factory's but just wanted to be sure. I have gotten some parts from craft stores but i would like to include fishing stuff sense it is what i do. heres a pic of my first assembly simple but still many ideas in my head. thought about using the snap swivels as the clasp in the necklace as well but will leave that or the next one I make.

Yep, went through the same signage issues back in the W.M. days.  Funny how we see it on fittings we use for our drinking water.  Go figure.....  Anything with contact or trace amounts of lead must let you know.  Guess the other 49 states don't care if you make it or not!

This piece I found on the beach while launching but I do plan on cutting into some of my shells. Im thinking a utility blade and just make cut after cut might do the trick or Ill just take a hammer smash it into nice size chunks and sand the edges for a more unique look. Im just starting out so these are all just hypothesis right now not sure how the methods would actually work out.
