I'm thinking of fishing somewhere in the bay this weekend for halibut. I have no way of keeping live bait, nor do I want to spend the $$$ for it. How well do artificials work in the bay - jigs, scampis, etc? What about a salmon style trolling rig?
 Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks!

I saw a few post of people catching them jigging swimbaits, seems as effective as anything else. You can also troll for them using a setup like this:

3 way swivel
2 feet of light line (8-10lb test)
flasher
topwater lure like a Yozuri crystal minnow

SteveS has had good luck with that setup. You place your weight on the light line and you want to bounce it as you troll.

i am pretty ghetto and dont know much about lures or different riggings but i pop a squid head off of a squid body and use that on a sinker slider setup for lifelike movement. that has worked good for halibut so far for myself in monterey. i think live bait will be deadly though.

i need to learn more tricks myself!

You can drift dead bait on a three-way set up and use a jig/swimbait as your weight. A few guys on Coastside have been using this method to some great effect.

mooch, how heavy was your jighead?

I'm thinking that if I was going to release fish anyway, a batray is starting to look pretty fun.
