Hey guys - I don't want to hurt any feelings here, but I want to help the community avoid costly mistakes that can also hurt the reputation of kayak fisherpeople.

There's been some discussion of keeping fish like rockfish when you are fishing more than one line like when you're after halibut or WSB.  Some folks seem to think that it's OK to keep a fish that requires only one line if you just reel in the others when you do decide to retain a "one-line-only" fish.  That's against the rules!  Be sure to only keep a "one-line-only" fish if you are only fishing one line at the time!   :smt001

Hoping to help anyone who's not sure out there.  Personally, I've learned alot from this community over the years, and by no means have I always had it right!  :smt006

Thanks Eric. I agree that we need to follow and UNDERSTAND the rules.

That is why I sent the 12" greenling back. I had two rods out and the second hook was foul.

Good job, Rob - there's much to consider when we target something with more than one rod and then catch unintended species.  Just as there is for having barbed hooks on and catching a salmon.  Knowing the rules is key to your overall fishing success, and following them is the basis of your personal sportsmanship.  It shouldn't hurt for us to help each other be clear on the rules.  Thanks for posting.   :smt001

Nice topic Eric,
Another bit of info FYI
While we are discussing rules I thought I might mention this.
Judging by the recent activity in the SC area, it is obvious that most anglers know the bag limit of fish like WSB and Halibut. However after discussing this with a local F&G Warden, he believes that many don't know the "POSSESSION" limit. Either he is correct, or some have eaten a lot of fish latley.
I will contact the local F&G office to verify this on Monday, but after the discussion and reading the Regs, it appears that the bag and possession on most currently popular salt species is the same = If you catch your daily bag limit ... you have met your possession limit.

When you reach your daily bag limit for that specie you must stop fishing for them. But I can go home, gift my days catch to Linelle and go out for another limit the next day no problem. What I cant do is give Tessa a limit and then have 3 limits in possesion.

Technically you are correct Craig, if you have it documented.

This is only to remind anglers to follow the rules, not how to get around them.

Ive never seen or heard  of the need to document gifting. Where is this in the regs?
If you are following the rules, how are you getting around them?

Documented: "Honey, I'm giving my limit to you and heading back out in the morning."

We usually don't get checked in our homes, but if you're camping out, just make sure that both parties are aware of it in case the warden questions both separately.

too late feelings hurt.im just gonna drag a cast net behind me than that will sovle the multiple rod issue. :smt044 just kidding thanks for clearing it up regulations are not the easiest to understand when reading.so i always read then ask my fellow fishermans on the ones that are a little confusing.
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Those are the rules Eric. It also applies to the coveted abalone. Which has so many stupid ass laws its unreal. I don't have to document gifting an abalone. The person doesn't even need a license. No one is getting around anything when gifting. They used to have exceptions for multi day trips. no longer.

I release all non-WSB fish caught while ghost hunting, even halibut. The possession issue did come up at the HMB crab opener where DFG was searching cars and boats.

Searching cars?  Were the cars occupied at the time of search?  Sheez, thats intrusive, i wouldnt consent to that.

But yes.  Following rules is good.

Except when the so called "rules" are applied in arbitrary and capricious manner (ahem, a-hole limekiln rangerz...). In which case id say go atticus finch on they a$$ ...

I would like to have someone from F&G document the answer to this one.  I have had experienced guys argue that you just have to bring in the additional lines after you keep a rockfish but it doesn't seem right to me.  If you have barbed hooks you don't just bend in the barbs once you catch a salmon.  It's saying you don't have to follow the rules until you are successful.  Doesn't make sense to me.
