I decided to ditch the thru hull location in favor of a scupper mount.  Good thing to... well I pulled it off the hull, the goop was really bubbly.  I was careful when I put it in too.  Judging by the way the bubbles were shaped, it appeared that as the goop dried and contracted, it sucked air from the foam doughnut.  Anyway... after some serious pvc engineering, I have a very clean/cool looking scupper mount... One oversight... the scupper tube is at a slight angle (off vertical, port to starboard)  so my transducer has a slight deadrise angle to it... I would estimate 5 degrees or so.  It is a lowrance, and will a little research I found that they recommend nothing over 10 degrees (mounting inside a vee hull) so I should be good right?  I don't see how having a slight side to side tilt matters all that much in a kayak that is rarely (if ever) sitting flat on the water to begin with.

You will be fine.  A transducer shoots in a cone angle/array anyways.

Thats what I figured too.  Unless you are very tilted, or charting very deep water the angle wont be too significant.  The slight tilt I have will shoot the cone slightly to the port side, which is actually the side I fish off or while trolling/ downrigging anyway.  That is my way of putting a silver lining on it anyway.  I was actually really pissed at myself for missing it after working hard at building what is actually a really cool mount setup.

i can with a slight lean ( depending on the cone angle) lose my DR ball off the FF screen.   Maybe a little more lean is going to helpfull and you say.

I suppose it actually could.  If I'm not mistaken, most transducers throw a cone that is really reliable of about 20 degrees... and can detect fish out to 60 degrees.  Even 20 degrees gives you a side to side margin of 10 degrees, which is probably why lowrance came up with that deadrise figure in the firstplace.

on another note i got the lowrance transducer scupper mount.

http://www.kayakfishingsupplies.com/servlet/the-1163/Lowrance-Transducer-Scupper-Mount/Detail

it basically took the transducer and it is tucked up into the scupper. pretty clean install but i do have a wire running across the deck kept in place with wire management clips. if interested ill take a pic.

Was thinking about that thing as well... I just wanted to save the money.  I had all the materials just laying around.  When I upgrade fishfinders, if a transducer change is required I may go that route for ease.

yeah its a nice clean install as there is foam and rubber blocks within the scupper hole to keep it pretty secure. im going to upgrade the bolt and hardware as it is all plastic.

I had read that the plastic stuff seemed sorta cheap... but it sure looks easy to do... as far as the wire, once I got it up through the scupper I drill a hole to run the wire back into the hull.  I installed a nice tight fitting grommet to keep water out.

Please post some pics of your install, I am going to move in that direction. Thanks Mike

Did you let the goop cure fully before turning on the FF?  If not, the ultrasonic pulses boiled the goop causing the air pockets you found.
