I all,
Finally getting around to rigging my hobie AI.
I wanted to mount rod holders and fish finder to the metal rod that holds the outriggers. anyone have any ideas on the clamps I can use.
Thanks

Heres' two options to mount to your akas

The RAM Mount is a specific RAM mount with 1.5" ball.  It is RAM Mount part # 271U-12
It is expensive.  Its about $40 for each one, but it works well.

The other one is a Pat R. made scotty mounting bracket.  It clamps to your akas with SS hose clamps and you can then mount a scotty side/combo on it (you can also then put a ram ball into the scotty mount).  Pat can also make custom brackets for you if you want a RAM base instead. Send him a message if you're interested.

oh by the way, the reason I mounted on the aka instead of the crossbars is that after putting it on the crossbar, it became more difficult to car top the kayak.  In addition, if you're sailing, you might want a bit more clearance from the main sheet for your rods.

Pat also makes a mount for fishfinders as well.  I didn't know about that until after I purchased my mounting system, and I honestly don't like my current mounting system that much.

if you look closely at the pics, you'll also see where my aka brace broke.  There's a plastic piece that is designed to break if you hit something with your akas/amas or put too much stress on the aka brace.  Its like $3, so I'm probably going to order quite a few to make it easy on me in the future if one ever breaks again.

It's made by RAM. Its pretty difficult to find online.  What I did is I send a custom quote request to Austin Kayak.

"Yes we can special order this for you.  I have sent you a quote to your email that you can check out through directly.  The price for this item is $43.06. Special orders take 2-3 weeks to come into stock.  Please let me know if you have any other questions."

I then used one of my 20% off coupons I get in the e-mail to get it to $34.45 with free shipping.  you can also try to google it or ebay?

yes those are the ones. the D is the 2" ball and the other one is the 1.5" ball.

I didn't order from RAM directly because I felt their shipping charge was ridiculous..

Has anyone ever heard of Railblaza mounts. Online West marine has them. Both rail and two types of flush mounts. Can you tube video on the different ways to use them.

There are also a ton of different clamps for dune buggies in 1.5-1.75 that fit the AI alas...

this is the youtube video of the railblaza

Yes, but there's a lot more on you tube to watch. I think what's cool is the locking feature, there is also a video on how strong they are. I think the base broke at 300 lbs. of side load.

I have 2 forward Scotty flush mounts, 4 PatR Aka mounts (3 port, 1 starboard), 2 Scotty mounts on the plano box. I like the Scotty mounts because you can convert them to RAM and the RAM mounts are heavier. Oddly enough, I am the only non-sailholic of the AI owners and roll with one Ama only most of the time so have 2 basic rigging scenarios full sail and 1 ama. For WSB, I pretty much use every rod holder and have the 360 light on the top of the mast in the sail mode.

Here are a couple more pics for you guys, kinda got the idea from Great Bass 2 but tweaked it a bit. was trying to come up with an idea on carrying my rods while under sail. Tested it to day and works great :smt006
