Just saying what's up. Joined today. Looking to learn. I've been in the water all my life, but not so much for fishing. Surfing. Kiteboarding. Sailing. Diving (tech diver). Had a few years spear fishing while in FL. I've either got a bad touch with a pole or a curse cause I have trouble landing fish  :smt005

Welcome, Luis. It sounds like you’ve got a lot of experience on the water, which is always a plus.

I know it gets hot out there in Santa Cruz during the summer, but you really should consider dressing for cold water immersion and wearing a PFD. I’ll leave it at that.

Hey Alex, appreciate for the note despite it being a touchy subject : ) I agree, normally do. This particular area is like my backyard pool (ex lifeguard and competitive swimmer blah blah). Thanks man. I'm actually planning to dawn patrol tomorrow if anyone [local] wants a "buddy".

It’s your call, of course, but I think you’ll find that this group takes safety seriously. We pride ourselves on not being “that guy” you see in the news - year after year - getting rescued because they headed out on a kayak without the proper safety gear.

For the record, I used to be “that guy” too. Avid surfer, good swimmer, etc, etc. I never needed to be rescued, but in hindsight I was lucky. I used to do a lot of kayak fishing all along the Central Coast wearing nothing but board shorts with an old PFD stashed behind my seat or even in the hatch. I’m glad that some of the OG members of this group set me straight when I joined up about 9 years ago.

I assure you, I take precautions after 30+yrs in the ocean and boating. I don't like to brag or start * shows so I kept my message short. The pic was taken by my 5yro. We must have been 100m from cowells, 60 to the stairs by indicators. Well within butt naked swim range.

Anyways.. I paddled out by mile buoy at sunrise (4/3 pfd vhf dry bag etc..) and caught a nice rockfish and a few other small guys that got returned home. Funny story - a small ling tried to take advantage of some bait I had on the sabiki of my 30" baitcaster and got tangled. Not every day I can say I took out a ling on a #10 hook on 6# mono 😁

It’s all good, man. Not trying to accuse you of anything, just giving you a heads up re: safety culture in this group.

Cheers,

Alex

Hi everyone,

My name's Kevin and i'm from San Francisco. I grew up freshwater fishing, but I wanted to get more into saltwater fishing this year in 2020. Haven't been able to get out as much as I wanted for obvious reasons, but I did use this time to pick up a new Hobie Outback on craigslist. Hope to make some trips out with all of you!

What's up guys and ladies? Avi here, been kayak fishing for about ten years but more seriously in the past few years. After I smashed my previous boat at Baker Beach I wasn't able to get my own ride until very recently, so now I'm armed with pedal drive and am ready to get back out there (safely) again.

In the photo you can see me and my significant other...she's since left me  :smt010  said my place was too hot  :smt003

Also I have a very small YouTube channel called Salt & Stream.

Tight lines!
