I'm not sure I'd call it provocative or controversial....definitely idealist hippie'ism with a veganistic naivety.

I'm gonna have a steak for dinner.

I guess I'd call it thought provoking more than anything else

and essentially very true if not totally accurate.

There's allot of things the current world can't sustain besides just meat production/consumption.

If you want to talk about habitat/ecosystem destruction try looking into palm kernal oil production and it's use in personal products.

And then there's that really crazy-ass idea of biofuels, worst idea ever.  Yes I'm serious on that one.

To name a few.

On the other hand this is the world I live in,

Tonite we're BBQing Pork.

I think every cow on the North American Continent should be whacked. Millions of Bison Roamed this exact same land with out feed or Antibiotics for thousands of years. Better for you and less methane.

Totally agree about biofuel. It seems ok if you're the only one doing it, because you can point your finger at everyone driving gasoline-powered cars, but once the whole world starts using it, it will no longer look so "green." The only solution in that arena is to drive less I think.

I'm eating roasted beets, potatoes, and carrots tonight! Going blackberry hunting now...

Yes....ethanol = garbage.

Regarding the rest of the facts....I don't discount them but I also factor in that the dollar (or whatever currency) will dictate land use, deforestation, draining of natural water sources.  If the livestock industry dries up and everyone is trippling up on vegies, that land isn't gonna sit fallow or turn into a national park, somebody will turn it into a farm and start a differrent process of destruction, except to grow vegetables.

I'd rather hunt down my food then eat these industrilized, hormone pumped animals. It's sad the lives they have to live.  Now I just need to grow some crops and I'll be livin off the fats of the land!

Many facts in there that can not be denied. Guess I am doing my part by hunting and fishing for my food. There is no doubt that I eat more deer, elk and fish than beef.

About 7 years ago I read The Food Revolution by John Robbins, I have not touched beef chicken or pork since. At first, it was my disgust for the meat industry and concern for my health that kept me away and not so much the save the planet and animal cruelty arguments. I.still don't eat anything other than fish for health reasons (I prefer my food hormone and antibiotic free) but now as I have matured it is also about having a connectedness to the things I consume, a basic desire to understand what it is to be human and connected to the earth. I am sure that many of you fish for the same reason. I won't eat an animal I know nothing about nor am I willing to slaughter myself. I think there is a fair amount of wisdom in the old proverb "you are what you eat". Food for thought, pun intended.

Btw, at around 170# and 10-12% body fat, I have never been protein deficient even during the three years I was completely vegetarian. The protein myth was fabricated by the meat industry, with the exception of anorexic teenage girls protein deficiency is almost non existant in the first world where malnourishment is not a problem
