Hey All,
I know I need to get a wetsuit but for the time being would it still be ok to use my waders I have for surf fishing until I get the funds for buying either a wet suit or dry suit. Or is it to dangerous if you tip and the waders fill with water and sink you.Right now I'm just going to stick to the bay and not hit the big blue just yet since I'm still new to the sport and still trying to get comfortable fishing from a yak. I think I'm pretty good as far as the rest of the safety gear is concerned (pool noodles, radio, signal device, pfd, gear leashes etc.) Getting a bilge in week or so as well. I'm not to worried about fresh water and delta sloughs right now since its warmer weather.
Thanks
Flip...

lots of threads on this (try a search) some ppl think its crazy other think its fine...I'd say if you do. use a belt (and have it tight) and layer with a good paddle jacket to help prevent water getting in. i did it for a bit but found it to be a pain in the butt when I had to pee.

I have both and I usually am in my waders when on the lakes. I have gone over with them on and they filled up slowly. The PDF I was wearing kept me up really well and if I had to I had plenty of time to strip off the waders. All that water did make it difficult to get back into the kayak.

I just got a new wetsuit and will be trying it out this weekend at the pay it forward event.

They now make waders with zippers on 'em.

youtube has some videos of people actually testing the theories.  Need to correlate them with where you are going fishing as well as your abilities.

In cold weather in rivers and lakes or if the water is kind of disgusting I use waders.  Not very much chance that I will be in the water for very long except if I am pinned under a log or something which negates everything.  On the ocean wetsuit.

Dry suits are probably the best but they are not full proof as what happened to one of our fellow kayakers due to improper inner wear and this guy as well http://www.saltwaterkayakfisherman.com/2011/11/id-been-out-fishing-at-bristol-channel.html  They are fairly pricey as well and is cost prohibitive to me as it would cost more than my kayak.

A basic 3mm farmer john is pretty cheap @ $75-150 new.  I bought mine off ebay for $35.  Check Craigslist as well.  Just the peace of mind makes this a very worthwhile purchase so you can focus more on catching fish.

Don't use waders, get a 3M Farmer John.  Check my GWS encounter on 7/7 at Safety First.  I am talking from first hand experience.

As mentioned above, a lot of discussion on previous threads.
I wear both b/c I can't stand the wet butt feeling or wet feet.... seriously.

I tried waterproof socks, boots, but find my fj wetsuit/wader combo to suit my needs best. See u otw!

Peace!

I'll sell you a used 3mil farmer john wetsuit for 20 bucks. I have 4 wetsuits and 3 pairs of waders...but now I have a drysuit, so I won't be using my wetsuit as often. But I'll still be wearing my waders when fishing lakes. Or just straight boardshorts if its hot.
If you go with waders, just make sure to buckle the wading belt tight and wear a paddling jacket over the top. And a PFD, of course.

Until I got the drysuit, my foolproof attire was a wetsuit w/paddling pants and a paddling jacket over it. It kept me warm and dry.

Mooch's apron. And socks.  :smt044

I'm actually the wrong person to ask about that one---like a total kook, I wear boardshorts under Levis, and a long-sleeve cotton t-shirt. The only part I get right is wool socks. But I plan to buy some better clothing for under-layers in my drysuit.

LOL...The nickname actually stems from me being half Filipino and half Mexican. Not because I'm clumsy.   :smt001

I also use waders, just haven't invested in a wet suit yet. I did have a yard sale with them on and was able to get back on my yak ok, it was the first time. I then went home, took off the belt put on my PFD, jumped in the pool and never sunk. Even with out a belt, with a good PDF you should be fine. It was a bitch to get back on my yak with my waders full.
Thanks,
Jeff
