hey folks , does anyone know what all that bubbling mass of water is offshore about 300 yards from the beach at moss landing is all about? i was near there this weekend and saw boats working persistently over that area again and again. is htis a secret halibut spot nobody told me about? i was assuming it was the warm water discharge of the power plant at moss landing but really dont know. and if it is, what the heck are these guys fishing there for. must be something as most sensible folks would not waste gas the way they were doing it since its so expensive to get out these days. this area was real close to shore too. i could have swam it : O )

naw....the original poop chute is located at the Oyster Point area (Bay). The poop chute is supposedly "re-claimed water".....but it stinks - especially on the warmer days  :smt011 And it does not "bubble" like the one in Moss. It's more like an upflow of water.

it's an outlet from the power plant I believe.

my barber says sometimes they catch salmon right on top of it.

Interesting, it probably holds a decent amount of bait as well. I don't recall seeing it anytime I have been out though. Anyone have any numbers for it they would be willing to share?

hey Bill,

thank you for the ling cod lure tip. im gonna try it come july. also as far as the boil area is its right near the mouth of the harbor kind of behind where phil's is. i circled the general area, super obvious if you look out to sea from this point actually. maybe it changes intensity depending on day? maybe homer simpson is working there and he feels more apt to turn the pumps on some days as opposed to others :smt004

I read some where that there is a poop pipe of some sort out of Moss. Supposedly folks are doing okay or better on halibut in the area.

i know guys go spearing for halibut along some pipes there in moss landing but i dont know what pipes and where they are. supposedly the fish just lie next to the pipes. maybe because its warm there and they are cozy. i think its like 20-25 feet deep or something like that. not real deep but there is halibut.

There are Pipes in Pajaro as well - about 3-4 miles North of Moss.

Is launching at moss the quickest way to get to those pajaro pipes?  From the map it looks like a 3 mile paddle.

Bill, I have seen it upwellling. It's a little unsettling as it's quite large. I am guessing that as jgp says, homer does
not keep it turned on all the time. it's in a somewhat hairy spot with a lot of backwash, boats coming and going etc.
I can't quite imagine busting out the sabiki and trying to sit there.

I also met a guy that has caught salmon from moss landing beach every year.  (!).

the problem i would have with the upwelling is that i would be afraid it would lower the surface tension and maybe sink my kayak. i have this fear of being swallowed alive by the ocean.

i saw on the discovery channel how they were coming up with theories about the bermuda triangle. one of the experiments was to let loose a large amount of gas bubbles from below, when they made their way to the surface the surface tension was disturbed and the boat started sinking. this was one of the theories that was proposed and it actually happened in the lab.

do you think this would be possible from this outlet pipe? there was a pretty big mass of bubbles coming out from it and the boats were working around it but not in it.

you are right mooch, it is real creepy. not only that but maybe a big chunk o'doo doo will come shooting up and knock your kayak over! doh!!
