During winter we put lots of moth balls and air fresheners in the cabs of our equipment to help keep all of the critters out. Try placing some ammonia in a container on the floor with a door open, it may be strong enough to make him want to leave.  Good luck.

Thanks for all of the advice. I was hoping to catch it for peace of mind cuz I was envisioning the Kill Bill black mamba scene. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to make it over the hill tomorrow!

I'm going to leave the door open for the next few days in the garage and hope it finds a new home.

This is the best solution, trust me, I have lost a lot of snakes in the house, water is the best attractant, a dish or bowl of water on the floor overnight with the doors open and it will find the water, then exit guaranteed!

oh, and if you want to make sure it exited the garage, if door cracked, shake some flour or corn starch in front of the doorway to trace it.

hell it is a garter snake,my friend Sarah lost her legless lizzard at Shelter last year and it showed up in Nebraska on her way home. I wouldn't worry to much. snakes on a plane is a different story though!!! Mooch might be a good warning device. I saw him scream like a 6 year old girl when he found a live mouse under his VW van hood in Tahoe a few years back
