I decided to wash my Weber kettle grill yesterday, this is a semi annual event.  I break out my dust mask heavy duty rubber gloves, and spray a heavy dose of oven cleaner on it.  Wait a while and hose it off.  Nothing to it right?  Wrong.  as the gloves I was wearing rubber coated lined gloves tactile feel isn't that great.  While trying to rinse the lid it slipped out of my hand.  Distance to ground 8-12 inches max.  The lid proceeds to bounce off the ground, on the rebound I try to snatch it in mid flight.  I miss and the lip of the lid catches me on the back of the left thumb and proceeds to cut through the glove, and into the back of my lower thumb knuckle.  I got a nasty 1-1.5 gash out of a bouncing grill lid.  I wash it and goop it up with antibiotic oinment and am wearing a bandaid with tape around it.  Had it not happened to me, I would not have belived it

There is myth out there you should never wash it, then the owner wonders why his steak burnt from the grease fire, or how they ended up sick, could be that chicken skin fromlast week.

I've held off from rinsing mine off, with hopes that Alain will finally come to take it off my hand.  :smt010 I did have to knock off a budding bee hive in the grill (bees entering the open vent holes).

After Q'ing up what ever, I "Cook off" the grill by turning up to high, till the grill is smoking, then scrape any crusted leftovers off with a water filled BBQ brush, the water steams up when it contacts the hot grill and helps dislodge the char'd remains.  After that, I'll wipe the grill (While hot) with a paper towel and some EEOV, then turn the grill off.

I found some aluminum grill covers at Home Depot, just put a new one on every time I grill and no mess, no fuss.

No washing of the grill for me.... a little scraping, some brushing is all. I dont try and burn it off, the grates get rusty easly. I'd rather have black marks than rust marks.

I like the wet brush/hot grill idea.  I usually turn it up to high scrub it down and then oil it with peanut oil just before grilling for the Q100.  For the charcoal grill, I close the dampers and let it shut down on its own.  The next time I use it scrub and oil as the chimney starter is burning.
