This might have been posted here before. Notice how the article keeps stating that this was "one pull by one trawler on one day"....

To view you have to copy and paste to your tool bar...couldn't make it a direct link

Tragic and outrageous.  Imagine also how events like this fuel environmental extremists.  Just what they need to apply pressure to limit the fishery.  Ultimately, the sport guys will feel it.

It's definitely tragic how we treat our resources. While I'm a sport fisherman first, I'm a environmentalist secondly. I agree, this saddens me as it does many of you. I get this irritating gnawing in my gut when I read how the agriculture lobbyist, and SoCal cities control our state legislators to take more and more delta water to irrigate the valley and the SoCal golf courses. Which in turn, continually reduces our striped bass fry, our salmon smolt, and sub-species/forage fish populations in the SF bay and delta. And to avoid a political conversation and it's remedy, I know that this situation is a double edge sword!
Having lived in NYC for some years, this unfortunate action make have some effect to the sportsfishing industry for some time. Fortunately for the East coast, there are more than one delta system down there to rebound from this stupid accident which is more than I can say about what we've seen from our state.  :smt013

It was in January too which is more than likely an overwintering spot since the fish were so dense. Crazy waste of marine life. It's intentionally done for flat fish like fluke and flounder were overwintering grounds  near the continental shelf are targeted for overwintering fish by trawlers
