I'm doing research on different DRs. What are your thoughts on these 2 DRs for lake and ocean trolling (Mainly for trout, landlocked salmon, and ocean salmon). I'm looking for a good DR that gets me at accurate depths, I want to be able to reach a good depth maybe at least 100 ft?, and make sure also that it isn't too big that it will tear the plastic (if I decide to do a permanent mount). I've seen where a guy mounted a depthmaster on his livewell and it appeared to work well. So many options and different types of DRs. I'd be rigging it on my 08 Hobie Outback. Hope I'm not posting a topic that has already been discussed. If so, please let me know and direct me to link and I will kindly remove this one. Thanks!

There's a huge difference in size and the 1050/60 can't be mounted to the #241/deck mount.  If you're going with the 1050, take a look at the 1060 since it has 2ft/turn.

I created this to fit into the #241 mount and I leash it just in case. It's held up so far, but I'll re-enforce it in the future to make sure.

Also, I switched to braid in case I need to cut it off immediately.

I've trolled at 100' with the 1073 and it was fine.  Retrieving 100' of braid wasn't pleasant, but I assume that to be the case for any hand crank DR on a yak.  Don't get me started on the mechanical geniuses that created remote operated electronic DR's cuz I'm jealous.

And nudling is correct, the first thing you do is replace the cable with braid.  Not only does it cut down on the noise from vibration, but for safety reasons as stated in the previous post.

Besides crabpots, you can run into whales and C. Khanh hooked into a huge shark that went airborne 40 feet from his boat.

I run the 1073 and have never had a problem. Make sure it is in easy reach so you don't get thrown off balance winding it up. I use a 4# weight also. Mine is mounted directly behind my seat on my Tarpon. Easy access to wind with my right arm. Keep the line as close to your kayak as possible too. It will pull you sideways less.

If you can zoom in a bit you will be able to see where i mount the small cannon i was talking about earlier, it is similar to the Scotty. I have it mounted on the right gunnel with a vise mount. It is easy to reach, out of the way, and doesn't cause any lean or drag problems. One crank equals one foot. The main drawback is if you get any slack in the line on the way down or you hit bottom, the line can loop/knot up a bit, can be a big pain. Other than that i like the system because i can take it odff easilt so that i can car top my Hobie.

I like the 1073 fits into the mod pod on OKs well and the boom is strong enough to mount a rod holder using a Scotty base and some u-clamps to save space.

ravensblack-craig (the nicest guy) gave me a 1073 while back & I am just started using it.
I put on my t-11's mod pod also & even use No. 429 http://www.scotty.com/fishing-gear-equipment/rod-holders/gearheadmounts.htm to adjust how I like it.  I will take a pic on my set up if I go out this weekend.  I use 4lb fish weight & have two lines (rods) for a down rigger using shuttle hawk http://www.shastatackle.com/stacking.html.  Little trick to put the shuttle hawk down, but once you get it down, it stays there good.  This way you are fishing in two different depth & only 50/50 chance to bring the down rigger up.  I haven't tangle the two lines yet but I haven't had double hook up either...  I have been fishing in 45 & 55 ft & I can see the ball stays there on my fish-finder when I slow down.

Any the down riggers you choose, I will put the removal ones only.  I think when you start fishing on the kayak, you will quickly realized that you can fish all kind of different species and don't want to carry down rigger (or brackets) all the time.

There's a huge difference in size and the 1050/60 can't be mounted to the #241/deck mount.  If you're going with the 1050, take a look at the 1060 since it has 2ft/turn.

I also use the 1073. Naoaki, what is the secret to getting that ShuttleHawk down? I bought one at FW in Sac & tried it once but couldn't get it to go down. Regarding the 1050 vs 1073......the 1050 is pretty bulky. I like to take the DR off and stow it in the hull when I'm done using it for koke and ready to switch to bass. I can easily get the 1073 in the Hobie 8" hatch.

I have used the DR in the ocean but the line & ball create so much drag that......well it's a lot of work to troll thru swell & wind waves with all that drag. Deep 6 seemed to be way easier.

Nice setup. Wondering if it gets in the way of your paddling? Looks convenient to have it right there.

Oh heck yea thanks for your input. I like the idea of having 2 rods on 1 DR with the Shuttlehawk setup, wondering how you keep the lines from tangling, but yea, less is better. If I can get my DR to be removable and not have to drill any holes that would be a plus. I"m trying to go least amount of gear. Looking forward to seeing your setup when you get a chance.  :smt001
