I have a 09 Pro Angler and I have used Yakima Mako saddles for supports since I bought the PA.  I originally used 4 Mako saddles and then I added an extra pair in the middle of the trailer hoping that would spread the PA's portly weight more and prevent the saddles from denting the PA's hull.  Even with the extra pair of saddles the PA's hull was getting too dented so I took the saddles off and added two 4" black drain pipes as supports.  I cut the pipes about 4" longer on each end of the load supports.  The main reason I used 4" pipe was so I could get my hand inside and tighten the U-bolts I used to secure the pipes to the load bars.  This was a straight foward and easy along with cheap mod.  The trailer is a late 40's 1/4 ton Bantam civilian trailer.  I may glue carpet to the pipes if I find the pipes are too slick on inclined launch ramps.

Damn..... That's a GREAT IDEA!!!
I too hate saddles.  I've seen a lot of deformed kayak hulls due to saddles.
Thanks for posting this.

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I did something like that with 2" Schd 40 PVC on my little trailer to haul my OK Trident 13, which is a bit heavy for me to lift over my head. I wrapped the PVC with outdoor carpet. I think it supports the weight evenly, and it works great for me. Best wishes.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I've built two kayak carts and a couple sets of kayak loading rollers using PVC. All of them broke within a short time. I don't trust PVC for any rigging. You don't want those pipes to break on you on the freeway. I would sleep better if those were metal pipes.

Lucky, I appreciate your input, now you have me paranoid!  Seriously though, I will keep a watchful eye on the pipes to see how they hold up.

I was thinking about the same thing for my trailer, but was worried about the PVC getting brittle as well.  Hmm, options, options....

Great build though!

Read on another thread not too long ago and I think I have this correct, that somebody added rebar or something on the inside for just this reason.

I thought about sleeving the 4" pipe to reinforce it, I will see what I can find.

You could sleeve it with a piece of wood.

Sleeving the pvc pipe shouldn't be necessary since the metal crossbars are bearing the load.  I doubt it would break.  It might bend, but that's not a bad thing if it's purpose is to cradle the hull.

Agree with Chuck. And Schd 40 is rigid enough and flexible enough when it runs parallel from bow to stern. I trust it.
