Alone in the Wilderness

Every now and again I take a lazy sunday afternoon to just meat out on the couch.  Sometimes Im rewarded with this great documentary on PBS called Alone in the Wilderness. Ive seen bits and pieces of it for years, but today finally saw the whole thing, and I couldn't turn it off.  Its hypnotizing.  Its about a man who, in his 50's, took his small nest egg and retired to a remote part of Alaska.  He builds his own cabin, tools, etc.. He catches his own food and explores the bush for 30 years or so, by himself, winters and all.  It's truly inspiring, and I think it shows a lot of what a determined person can do.  He is a very deliberate, creative, and methodical man, and it really puts me in a zone to watch him explain, SLOWLY, what he's doing, and his philosophy behind doing it.  that is all.

Add to that he was before his time on the cinematography part as well.  Reality tv really old school.

Awesome stuff thanks for the link. I second what steve says on the whole camera part. I'm hooked now and want to see more.

Reminds me of and old school Les Stroud who was there for much more than a week.

Cool show ive seen a segment before, very inspiring dad

last month, i had "Alone in the Wilderness" in the dvd player in the bedroom and repeatedly watched the video many times before nodding off.  By about the sixth or seventh time, the missus was ready to strangle me and and put the remote to the flatscreen LOL.  "If you envy him so much why don't you pack up and f'ing move!"  ROFLMAO!!

Talk about living the dream.  They don't make 'em like that guy anymore.  Someday I hope to have popeye sized arms like he did, never mind at the age of 53 or whatever age he was when most of the film footage was shot.  and it was all before invention of the interwebs and mobile comms.  Only a very unique mind and body could sustain that kind of solitude under those conditions.   

Best line of the movie:  "Peppery ram stew - just the way I like it.  It's got everything in it but the kitchen sponge."   

I'm glad that theres other folks hooked on it, my wife gives me so much shi% for watching it because even if I saw it earlier, ill watch it again and again   she thinks its soooo boring, and I can't even hear her when I'm watching it I think I'm going to get the book, I'm sure its quite a read!

 

  That is a great show.  His talant was endless.  HIs skill set is probably lost in today's Hi tech world.  He needed a bear proof food storage, so he up & built one! Felled all the trees for his cabin, gathered all the rocks for his fireplace.  Man was a true Mountain man!

 Every couple of months some buddies and I have a man day and at the center is an all meat dinner, scotch and this movie.  It is very inspiring as well as unimaginable.  I don't think that people realize how long he was alone for.  4 years longer than I have been alone.  To conquer isolation for that period of time is incredible in of itself let alone all the other amazing things that he did.  People ask if I could be a super hero, my reply will always be Dick Preonnokke.
He is the only person to do more pushups then chuck Norris.  Awesome thread
