I'm thinking of running over to Sears or that rack place to buy a cargo carrier that attaches to the hitch (shown in the link).   I need it to load additional gear for family camping on Monday.  Any of you have experiences with it?  got any advice?  thx in advance!

Seems like a good idea. Sears has always seemed reliable to me. U-haul and several others carry them as well.

John go to Harbor Freight.  I got mine there for 49 a couple of years ago.  since have given it away after selling my Cherokee.  They work really well and sturdy.

Peter, is your hitch positioned level on your car, as opposed to your link where I noticed the tilting hitch before reading the notes?!

Howard, sorry but I'm not sure exactly what you mean. The hitch is level...the basket rides pretty level also, if I recall. Haven't used it since last September. You can assemble the basket with the attaching bar angled upward or downward...I chose the latter so that it would clear the back door of our CR-V. That gave me a little less ground clearance though, since the Honda isn't that high. With a full load I'll scrape the road going in and out of driveways if I'm not paying attention. A taller vehicle and/or reversing the angle would remedy this.

Read my Amazon review on the basket too...you've gotta watch out for the exhaust flow on your vehicle otherwise it might blow right into the load like mine did.  :smt083 Which reminds me...I need to get my brother-in-law to help me weld a metal plate to the basket to divert the exhaust flow before I go camping next month!

One of the pictures in the Amazon link shows the hitch sitting uneven on the guy's car. So I was wondering if you had the same issue or if it was just that person's problem.

John,

I've got one I've been wanting to get rid of, it looks like this. the tray is solid sheet with plenty of holes in it for drainage I guess,

the tray is 20x56 and the hitch bar is 2" and straight, no rise or drop.

I live in Martinez, you can have it if you want to pick it up.

Howard, it rides pretty level. Everything sits fine, no sliding.

John, I'd take Dale up on his generous offer though...the price rocks!  :smt003 NCKA demonstrating its awesomeness, as usual.  :smt004

Sorry, Dale, I did this wrong on the first try. If John does not want it, I'll take it. I live in Vallejo, can meet you tomorrow a.m., otherwise won't be back in town until next Tues. Let me know (PM). I will really take it off your hands with thanks.

X2 on watching your exhaust flow when running one of these things. I had a Flowmaster dual out the rear system on my last truck, without thinking of things I loaded up my cargo carrier with firewood/ice chest/etc.  Thank God I stopped 20 minutes into my drive to check the load, as the ice chest was melted and smoking.  Could've caught the whole thing on fire!  But they are handy, mine was from Harbor Freight too, no problems.
