Now that I have a great Kayak, I'm really excited to be kayak fishing out here, but have to admit I'm a little nervous to go out in the Ocean for Salmon- worried about GWS. Not sure I'd be able to relax...

That said, do people still catch Salmon in the Bay from Kayaks? If so, where do they go and what time of year is the Bay productive?

Also, does anyone have trouble getting their work done?  This Kayak forum is crazy addictive!

Thoughts on Salmon in the Bay are sure appreciated.

Salmon are caught all over the bay but usually a freak catch. Calif City in late August/Sept is your best bet they release a lot of Salmon there and some years they sit in that slot up against the pens for awhile, they are usually good size fish. I've caught Salmon off Yellow Bluff also but you really have to watch the current there is can get nasty really fast.

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Where exactly is Calif City and what pens are you referring to??  Where do you access CCity?  Thanks!

I guess Paradise Pier would be the closest

I've made and attached a map of cal city off of Tiburon.

Paradise cove is a great park but you'll need wheels to get from the parking lot to the water. The automated parking lot takes credit cards, opens at 7am.

Look out for the wake from the oil tankers. It takes about ten, fifteen mins. for it to get to you. Not a big deal if your pointed toward it. Don't sit on the rocks near the hatchery and eat lunch like I did. 4-5 foot wake rocked my world.  :smt013

The ferries will stay away from you. So will the boats taking people to San Fransisco.

I went there three days last fall for nada. Its very hit or miss. Ken at Loch lomond bait shop will tell you if there's been any action.

With thousands of kayaks, surfers, swimmers in the water on any given day I think the odds of seeing the landlord are slim. At least that's what I tell myself.

Hope we fish together someday.

Another good place can be in the Carquinez straits.  Specifically off of Benicia State Park of First St in Benicia.  You can launch your kayak at 9th St in Benicia.  Beware the current can get ripping pretty good thru there.

I'm sure Jedmo will have more input and knowledge of this area too.

The chance of having a GWS encounter in SF bay is way, way less than catching a salmon and those are pretty rare.

Benicia (I did not catch this fish - a lady caught it casting a spinner from shore)

I'd argue the bay (tide wind and traffic) is much more dangerous then the big blue.....excluding Bean!

EASY launch from Horseshoe Cove/Ft. Baker on Marin side, directly under the GG Bridge.  Can troll out front of Yellow Bluff toward Racoon Straights, or out the gate and ride the tide back in if you time it right. Look for a day with little tide movement - there are some days where it's as much as 9ft difference between high and low tide (not the day to do this!!), and some days where it's less than 1ft.  Better chance later in year, like starting August when more of the fish are making their push up the system.
