Actual for any kinda large fish...

But here's a picture of my mini gaff, just under 24"; but with a full size hook.  Real easy, just took my pb gaff and chop'd off  what I didn't need and then re-attached the grip...

Also pictured is my new contingency plan for the larger species that wont fit in my net and to squirrely to gaff. I saw something similiar on one of the hawaiian vids and also think I saw one on Tote's yak at GS; so I decided to make one should the need ever arise where hook a Pac Butt.

Got the Detachable Spear Tip at my local dive shop (but you probably can get it cheap online) for $32 at Capt Aquas, hardware was another $5, Grip was $5 and the shaft was something I had lying around in my workshop.

I drilled a 6mm hole in the shaft, tapped it with a 7mmx1.00 tap.

Went down to Ace hardware and bought a 7mmx1.00 1.5" long and had them cut the heads off.

Put a little Marine Goop in the shaft, threaded the stud and then attached the spear head.

Put some goop on the grip, let cure and it's down....

REAL easy, hardest part was locating all the right parts that would work... I'll hopefully test it out this weekend when I hook that 5' hali in Santa Cruz :smt044

Great minds think alike! That is what I'm going to be making. Going to dive shop this weekend. I'm planning on using stainless steel for the shaft; I want the weight of it for extra kenetic energy to pass all the way through a BIG hali. I guess after seeing the gaint one 2 feet from my yak, gives me the idea of having to pierce up to 12 inches of flesh! I'm going to set mine up with a line a float (crab)

Glen, if that gaff's shaft is thick enough and you want a barb on it, let me know. You would need to put a leash on it after that though.

Nice going looks like that should work...

Why did you shorten the length.

Only thing is the gaff length. Really wish the NCKA gaffs were 3-4ft I like that length but that's me. Getting that fish gaffed before it hits the surface is nice.

Anyone have a reason why you like the short length.

Not sure about others, but for me: during my experience as a powerboater, as long as the fish's head did not break the surface of the water, they didn't go nuts. And the length of the gaff shaft was to compensate for the side hieght of the boat. So I figured since I am close to the water, I really didn't need the extra length on the shaft; I can touch the water at arm's length, so I figured 2 extra feet would be sufficient.

I was gonna use this  :smt044:
