Thinking of a new rod for big game... both bottom fishing and sturgeon and what not.  I know a lot of guys use the Tiger rods.  Any opinions on rather to go medium action or medium heavy?  I'm looking at a 7 footer... one piece.  The medium is rated to 6oz. 20-50lb test... the medium heavy is 8oz. 30-60lb test.  I generally prefer lighter tackle whenever possible, but with heavy jigs, and big fish I'm just not sure.  I am leaning toward the medium, unless someone has a reason why I should reconsider.

I freaking love my Tiger!!! I decided to go with the medium light model so I can have fun fishing whether I'm targeting halibut, big lings or even rock fish. I run a Pen 320GT reel with 25lb test as my all around ocean rod.

Hope that helps.

when jigging for rockies how heavy of a lead do you use and feel comfortable with on that action?  The only two sturgeon I have ever caught were on a rod most would say was under-sized... so i'm not so worried about that...

I've got two Tigers matched with Ambassador(sp) reels.  The perfect combo for me in the bay in less that 100'.  Fine for halibut and rockfish.  I've never caught a sturgeon so couldn't say.  The Tigers are 7' two piece, med action, 10-50 lb.  model 2201-2.  They come in one piece too.  I like to be able to break it down and stash it in the hatch if necessary.  Great value for the price, $50 to $60.  Outdoor World carries them.  Tough well-made rods in my opinion.

I got a few ugly sticls and 2 of the tigers, decent rods for the money.  Of course there is better but , if you lose an ugly stick, its not like loosing a calstar or a trevela or some other higher end rod.

6-8 ounces is totally doable but I usually use 3-6. Once you need more weight than that while fishing inshore it's time to go home anyway.

Yeah, 6ish is what i had in mind, so that is good.  Like I said I prefer lighter as opposed to heavier anyway.  I hear ya on the time to pack it in thing... lol.  New safety standard: if you need more than 8oz. to get down vertically on the rockies... it is too damn windy to be out!

Personally I do not use the same pole for sturgeon and bottom fish (rock fish, halibut).

For sturgeon I use a Ugly Stick Tiger  BWC2200 7' med-light action.

For bottom fish I use a Ugly Stick Tiger Light BWCL2200 6'9" medium action.

The main difference between the two poles is the sturgeon rod has a much softer tip, for detecting their soft bite. While the bottom fish rod has a heavier tip for jigging with 6oz weight.

I don't do enough salt to justify investing in another reel, so Ryan... if you were to give one up, which would it be?  Which one would you keep in order to fill both needs as well as possible?

Exactly...once it's that windy it's time to be doing other things....like... :downtown:

Haha....sorry...just found that emoticon....had to find an excuse to use it.

I remember reading a post in the past by a NCKA member saying there using the medium heavy for sturgeon. Maybe get the medium heavy, since you don't do enough salt water fishing? I'm interested in sturgeon fishing from a kayak, so I'm looking forward to buy that ugly stick.

like I mentioned earlier jtlpe156... you really don't need a piece of rebar to catch sturgeon.  I caught mine on my shimano tdr... my ocean salmon rod at the time.  The sturgeon was 74" and fought like a truck... it is more about the balance between a sensitive tip, and the backbone for jigging all day without breaking your wrist...

I've never caught a sturgeon so I wouldn't know. I need to consider now before I buy mine, thanks.
