I feel like my kayak is "off-center" when paddling (going straight but not pointed in that direction). Could be the swell/wind direction...

My main question though is- when I land @ the beach, the yak stern almost always goes sideways. My rudder is not deployed, and I'm pretty good @ using my paddle to maneuver and straighten myself out. Yet almost without fail, right before my yak reaches the sandy shores, the yak's stern gets sideswiped.  Most of the times, I still land ok. Other times, especially with a sleeper swell, my yak flips in less than 1 feet of water. I've lost my gps that way.

SO WHAT's causing the stern to be sideswiped like that when landing?  I have noticed that it happens on occasions where I have a lot of water in my hull (couple of quarts)... water comes in thru my front hatch when I take a lot of waves.

Anybody else's adventure do that?  I think it's the water in the hull causing it, but not sure...
Peace!

That's not the hull, that's the way waves work on your hull. The front of the wave where the bow is, slows down, while towards the back the water is moving faster..off sideways you go!
Same principle that makes the waves break.
Bracing, etc and you can correct that, but takes practice.
My old necky dolphin surfed the best of any yak I've had....adventure is second, and sorry OK, my beloved prowler 15 was a distant third-tied with the scupper.

Instead of riding it all the way to dry sand, hop out a bit early ( on the wave side) then grab the bow line and drag it in.

Ditto.... to my surprise, the Hobie Adventure surfs better (flips less) than my OK Prowler 15.

This is a very useful and insightful thread.

I have not done a surf launch/landing on my Adventure. I would imagine it won't be pretty the first few attempts. I'll have to go gear-less at first and play in the surf for awhile. I can see that.

My greatest fear is having that 16 foot/thin hull act as a pole vault.

Are you guys coming in with your legs dangling over the side and the paddle acting as a rudder? What angle to the wave seems the best? 30 degrees etc.?
