Sounds like the ig BUTT was at the helm...    he must have wanted to see that cool looking yak you were in...   :smt003   or trying to create a rescue.

Flat seas certainly can bring out the yahoos, but I would have expected more from coasties.

I'm about as tolerant a guy as you can find, I think the only people in a boat I've ever just gone off on (verbally) was a coast guard crew in one of those 20+ ft inflatables. Rude and stupid is the only description I can come up with for that crews actions.  Of course one dumb thing doesn't label a whole group.  Your experience woulda pissed me off too.

This one is easy to take care of, call the the local CG station commander.   Give him the facts of what happened, time and description.  Somebody will get a stern lecture from the boss.

That's the right attitude.  Not to condone what happened as correct, but like you stated "no harm, no foul".

Are you talking about the CG auxiliary when you say vol CG? They can be over zealous at times and don't necessarily realize their   affects on others. As they a  are not fully trained CG they mean well though.

Being that the CG has Non Commisioned Officers similar to the other services (being a former NCO before I made the switch), we live by the creed of NCO's.  When someone violates the creed, most true NCO's take offense at the action and feel it is not only our duty,  but obligation to ensure that the infracaction is corrected.  We all pay taxes, that boat, the fuel , the persons training is all paid for by us, if this person treats this his vessel as his personal water taxi, then we (as NCO's, not kayakers or boaters) have failed to instill the proper discipline and respect with regards to the people they serve. IMHO It is a privlage to serve this country, it is a solmen duty not taken light and as the creed states.

the Creed of Non Commisioned Officers (Army Version):  No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as "The Backbone of the Army". I am proud of the Corps of Noncommissioned Officers and will at all times conduct myself so as to bring credit upon the Corps, the Military Service and my country regardless of the situation in which I find myself. I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety.Competence is my watchword. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind -- accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my soldiers. I will strive to remain technically and tactically proficient. I am aware of my role as a Noncommissioned Officer. I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role. All soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership. I know my soldiers and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my soldiers and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment.

Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as well as that of my soldiers. I will be loyal to those with whom I serve; seniors, peers, and subordinates alike. I will exercise initiative by taking appropriate action in the absence of orders. I will not compromise my integrity, nor my moral courage. I will not forget, nor will I allow my comrades to forget that we are professionals, Noncommissioned Officers, leaders!

Please, make the call. Explain to the CO that this could have turned into a much more serious situation than it was. Politely ask the CO to educate all his people on the need to approach kayakers at a lower speed, so as not to possibly incur a capsize and subsequent self-or-assisted rescue. Emphasize that no one need get their ass chewed, and that you sincerely appreciate their presence on the water. Maybe say the incident occured recently, at such and  such location, but don't mention a specific date.

Also, consider that if you were in the water, and the CGA did approach at a high speed in order to rescue you. But you were 20 yards from your boat, in the direction of the rapidly oncoming CGA vessel.....

Regards,
Scott

I spoke to the CO the other day  in parking lot ...I mentioned to him my ordeal without dates or specifics, I  told him he can look on the site and see it is not a 1 time deal it has happened before and ask him if he could let the vol captains  know that kayaks are a little more sensitive than other boats when it comes to a slowing or stopping vessels wake...I forgot to mention the part about me wanting to shoot a flare threw his guys boat or about the TV news story if a CG boat flips me ...but it was well received and I think a general something or other will be said..
