I was just wondering what some techniques are to fishing the rare striper boils? I know guys that swear by Flukes. I was thinking a spook?

How would you do it?

thanks for reading  :smt006

I'd try to "match the hatch" to the extent possible.  Kastmasters/flukes at Mendo.  Plugs, cranks, swimbaits at salmon/steelhead/trout release sites, etc.   Rapalas, irons and jigs in the salt. Jigs that mimic baitfish work well too. Live bait in SW.  Never hurts to have a Jumbo in FW trailing on a second rod as well.      :smt006

For me its a Zara spook or a large popper. I like bubble poppers when it comes to poppers.
and a subsurface crank bait.

flutter spoon or Alabama rig.  Match the hatch as much as possible.  It's been too long since I've seen stripers on the surface though.

I agree in most part to match the bait as much as possible; but you also want it to stand out. I usually fish a larger lure than the bait and cast just on the outside of the boil...

My goto lure is a Pearl  or Yellow Striped Long A Bomber; love them so much, got a rafter full of them...

When I was in High School, we used to have access to this slough in Union City/Hayward where stripers would boil where the slough met the bay. We would throw crank baits and jerk baits from shore and they would get hammered. I feel like anything remotely resembling a bait fish will get hammered. But listen to what the OG's tell ya. I think matching the hatch is the safest bet. I know my reply probably isn't the most helpful, but striper boils get me excited!

I like a 4-5" swimbait with a 1/2oz head. The swimbait will generally outcast most lures which I find to be a key when fishing this style. Boat, unhook, repeat tends to be a tad easier with a single hook especially if your are netting the fish. I burn the lure on the surface if casting into the actual boil and I'll let it sink out if the boil is off or has moved.  I like to fish a sinking lure because a long fall will often trigger a strike when the fish are pushing the bait up to the surface from deeper water.

I've got most of my boiling experience at Mendo. The Zoom fluke rigged weightless is king here, but I always have a
a topwater Dance Shad on another rod in addition to a silver Kastmaster. When the boil goes down is when I throw the K'master and let it flutter down.
For the ocean surf I like a Striper Stryker topwater plug.
Sometimes they seem picky and you need to match the prey forage.
During the good 'ol days we used to try and see what other things they'd hit.
I've caught them on a buzzbait!
Why do you ask FiShadow? Hmmm?

a watched striper boil will never boil  :smt012 Went to new hogan for the first time today Cool enough lake. The stripers were going in little mini boil spurts. a few would jump at the same time. then one and another the would fly out of the water. Pretty cool. But i couldn't get them to hit shit. threw chad-raps, storms, Zara spooks, and rattle traps. Whole lotta good it did  :smt013 :smt005 Locals said they Love Shad so I did my best to imitate one. May give it another try but there are a few lakes in the motherlode that look cool too

I agree with Meat Hunter. A single hook/swimbait or bucktail jig is the way to go. Can go deep or work it on top. Covers all depths fast.

Most times you just don't have time to unhook multi-trebles. You might get two or three quick fish then they're gone.

I do like a hopkins w/ a single or treble hook as well.
