I want to purchase a Color GPS Fish finder combo. Any recommendations pro or con?

I have a Prowler Trident 15 with Modpod. Price range open.

Thanks,

Antonio

I prefer to have two separate devices.  The fishfinders really take a beating in the salt water environment and my GPS is waterproof, floatable and attached to my PFD.  From a safety point of view, I like to know my GPS and VHF are with me, even if I'm tossed from the yak.  I don't use the GPS as a tool for fishing as many do.  For me, it's just a safety device and a way to get home in the fog.

I use a Humminbird 788ci mainly because of the high resolution of the screen and large screen size.  I am very satisfied with it.  I also have a Garmin GPSmap 76CS handheld but I never use it since I got the combo FF/GPS.

The new lowrance units are nice. I personally don't like the combo units. I want my FF mounted in the front of the boat out of the way. And my gps closed so I can mark waypoints. With a combo unit you would need to mount it with in easy reach to use the gps and that can get in the way of paddling and fishing. Next time your out on your yak try to reach where you want to mount your FF and see if it's in the way of anything.

Jbaker,

Another excellent reason not to have the combo unit. I already have a Garmin hand held GPS so I guess I don't need another.

Thanks guys

Antonio

I have the combo FF/GPS mounted on the side rail of my Pro Angler, the unit is right next to the seat and is out of the way and easy to reach.

Got a Humminbird 385ci combo last month. First FF and I love it! Got it for under $400 and seems to be one of the most recommended.
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

Ditto for me.  I've had alot of Lowrances, and both brands toggle pages about the same.

Only trouble for me is I have the 385 ci di and I'm not picking up the detail. May be because I gooped the transducer... still researching.

I've been running the Lowrance M68C for a few years now.  Happy with the unit.  May change up to a new Lowrance for the higher Def stuff.

I have a Lowrance HDS5 w/ Navionics Platinum Plus.  I also have a handheld GPS for backup as well as a compass.  I use my GPS maps all the time it shows where the reefs and what kind of bottom im on.  I havnt had a chance yet to put the lake maps to work yet, but just sitting at home I can explore the 3d view of most of the lakes with incredible detail of the slopes and dropoffs.
I mount my electronics on athe sliding Xwing console.  Works great for me.

I prefer the combo units, especially since you can navigate in fog or to a location hands-free.

I just picked up a HB 597 and so far so good.

Color will suck your battery faster. I just bought a Humminbird 718 for the 4.3. 5" screen. Then I have to decide on a handheld GPS.
