After a few weeks of Kayak fishing and 1 fish  something is telling me  " Dude on,,hook line and sinker"
. I love Shimano reels and have never had an issue in all my years tournament BASS fishing...so I am going to be purchasing a Shimano Tekota with a line counter  just for mooching in my Raptor..
My question is what size reel would a""Mooching Kayak Vet " look at specifically for kayak mooching in our area  ?? I am still brand new and do not have any realistic idea what depths I will find myself fishing or how much line is needed {{ it is mind blowing when I look at the depths around here}} . I do not want to spend that kind of money and end up with a size  small or big .....
Thanks for reading ,, please SPIT it out  if you have a opinion

I'm no "Mooching Kayak Vet" but I'll throw in my choices...

What I will be using are Shimano TR 100G and TR 200G for light/heavy mooching (15-20 lb test).

Works fine for halibut/strpers too.

Good luck.

line counters are cool n all but you can do just as fine by just pulling 12 inches (roughly) of line 1 pull at a time to get to your desired depth. when kayak fishing in the salt the more moving parts that your reel has the more in depth cleaning you will need to do. just my opinion.

Never had any issues with my Shimano Calcutta 401 TE. It's loaded with 20# suffix braided line with a top shot of 20 ft. of 15# fluorocarbon paired with a Clarus rod.

IMO: line counters only add weight to the the set up.

*While the majority pull a foot of line to get to the desired depth, I thumb release 5 feet of line by simply raising my rod up and down.

When I troll I try to get 100' out. I tied my line to the bumper of the car and counted the "revolutions" of the level wind to reach 100'. On my koke rods with 8 lbs. line and a 4000 series Abu Garcia it takes 8 "revolutions" to hit 100'. I can figure most everything else and be close enough. I wouldn't trust most fisherman to know 6" pull from a 12" pull  :smt003
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

+1 on the shimano tr 100 or 200, I have both and my 200 has caught everything from salmon and halibut to rockfish and sturgeon. Spooled with 20lb trilene I don't think you will find a better all around reel. If I could only have 1 it would be the tr200 only difference between the 2 is line capacity and I have had a few rock fishing trips where I've lost alot of line for various reasons and still have plenty left after cutting to keep fishin. Good luck in your search.

I do the same thing.
But every pass of my Diawa 300 with 30lb braid is 10ft.
Works out pretty good.

I had two inexpensive reels with linecounters but they both quit after 2-3 trips on the salt. I'm debating spending more for a better one but i don't feel confident that will make a difference. With a level wind reel - I agree, just see how much line come out as the guide travels from far one side to the other far side. This is usually 8 - 12 feet depending on the reel They also have those counters, for about $15, you stick on the rod
