Despite the questionable forecast, made the trip over to Trinidad on Saturday for the opening weekend.  Fog was light and breaking up quickly, winds were relatively calm when we arrived at 7:00.  Swells were pumping, so we couldn't get in on the north side of the head, so we started out south till we started graphing fish.  Long story short, the wind started ripping, it was all we could do to maintain position, let alone fish.  After a few bites without connecting, we headed for shore and a cold beer to regroup.  The Fish & Game lady came over to go through the normal "what'd ya catch, how big, how deep...", she told us not a fish had been brought in, and this was at 11:00.  Needless to say, very dissapointing, but at least we weren't the only ones having a slow day.  We headed back out to fish the head, but the swells/wind kept us at least 50' away.  My buddy finally hooked into a small ling, which we released and decided to call it a day.

Back at the truck for another beer and to enjoy the show at the launch.  I can't think of much better entertainment than to watch an impatient moron in a $50,000 boat try to position himself on the launch sled in that wind and current.  I wish I would have brought my video camera.

Also, we talked to a few guys running crab lines, there check on 12 pots yielded two crabs.  Pretty bad all around.  Still a nice trip, but i'll wait another month or so for the ocean to settle down before making the trip over.

Tight Lines,
Ben

I agree, nice report and that's Trinidad in one short story; one day calmer than snot and the next, windy as heck. Last time for me was a windy day. Pretty hard to plan for a place like that if you travel to it. I still have my rods rigged for the rocks out there and will try to get out there myself for a few drops.

Sea anchors save the day when it comes to wind.  I wouldn't have been able to fish sat morning without mine.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
