Seen a few posts on CS refferencing bait and salmon off Mavericks from this past weekend. Sounds like it might be worth a shot for the lucky weekday anglers.

It all sounds good until you see the water.  Not friendly at this time. The May winds are doing there thing right now. Hopefully we will catch a break in the wind and swell in the same day!

NOAA has 20-35K winds all week but surfline has it in the 5-10 k mornings and the wind site I check has it around 15 for the mornings.........under normal circumstances I'd go with the surf forecast cause they're better at forecasting the nearshore conditions but I just checked the webcam and there's sheep in the meadow....big time.  definitely check the cam before heading out.

Jason is right - it's ugly out there. Mooch - figure on it being ugly most of the season... :smt002

Salmon and wind: I think one theory is that without the wind causing upwelling of colder water, krill, anchovies and fog, there won't be any salmon near shore, and with the wind and fog, we can't get to the salmon nearshore, if indeed any are there.  I guess we can wish to get a short break in the wind and fog.
Thanks for the tip - I'll have to scout out HMB/Mavericks while thinking of how I will explain to my wife how taking my yak to Mavericks makes sense.

You hit the nail in the head on that one Fuzzy Tom.  Good call.

How does  paddling a kayak where the biggest deep water swells in Northern Ca come to collide with an unforgiving rock cragged reef not make sense????? We are talking Salmon  :cowboy_cool:

I had an interesting day fishing there about 10 years ago. Had no idea what I was doing, but had just bought a kayak and paddled out from Half Moon Bay. I hooked a rock cod, and as I brought it to the surface, a whole school of salmon followed it right to about a foot from the surface. I just about shit my waders, and then suddenly they were spooked and water exploded in spray all around me. I switched lures to target them, and a few minutes later a sweeper wave appeared from no where, turned me side ways, and had me sailing towards shore. To make matters worse, there were large rocks sticking out of the water before the shore, and I managed to scramble out of the boat and use it to cushion the blow before impact, which was heavy.  I managed to loose about everything I owned, save for my boat and my life. Somebody was kind enough to give me ride to my car. Long story short...watch out for sleeper waves at Mav.

don't forget the GWS like the one that popped the surfer last year when he was surfing some tiny waves out there...

above mavericks are ross cove and flat rock, two super spooky surf spots I have hit a bunch.  I always feel like
a rapala paddling out to flat rock that liittle island up there. the waves break on the inside of the island on south
swells and super low tide, it's a great wave, but fickle.

Once in the fog at flat rock a he-uuge bull sealion chased us to shore. there are lots of females there that
will surf the waves with you and generally cause jealousy with old yellow-tooth knothead.

hmm, somebody could catch a _real_ big fish at the derby this year!

just hang the grappling hook out the scupper hole.
