Hi guys just wanted to say that Ive had a blast fishing and diving with everyone here! Made my transition from the college life to the real world run smoother! Well I got accepted to an aquarium training program in Newport OR for this fall and will be leaving CA for a year minimum to who knows long  based on what and where the job market might take me. Im excited for the opportunity and for the new fishing adventures that await me up there. Well enough blabbering now for my questions I will join NWKA soon but just want to ask any one from here about the fishing/hunting/foraging opportunities in the newport region. I know their rockfish and pac halis but dont know anything about their seasons and locations. Also anyone know anyone renting up there or willing to hire some one part time? :smt003 My orientation starts sep 21st so ill probably be moving up the first week in sep thinking of visiting breweries and fishing my way up the coast. Any and all info welcome Ive visited before but not with any locals met a guy kayak fishing out there last august and talked a little about the area. Its right at the mouth of the Rogue River so im thinking salmon and steal head is a must to learn about. Thanks a lot guys.

Wes

Yaquina River not Rogue but no matter, the Rogue Brewery is right there within stumbling distance of your new workplace.  Congrats on the job!

That's awesome Wes, grats and good luck up there! I was thinking Yaquina too, anyway I think the Chinook start arriving in late august so your timing should be perfect to get some fresh pink. I will also be needing inside info on the small coastals and timing their steelhead runs  :smt002

Look forward to fishing the SMC with you this summer, we still gotta check out the launch we scoped out last year.

It is gonna be a blast for a kayak fisherman.  Crabbing, Salmon, Steelhead, rockfishing out of Depoe Bay, halibut, and more.  Newport is growing with the new NOAA marine operations headquarters there too.  There are albacl=ore charters available in the late summer/fall when they are in.

My wife and kids love that area too, in no small part because of the aquarium.  Your next year should be a blast.

Congrats Wes, I know you talked about that program a lot!

I was thinking to my self that dude is nuts for trying to get 4 dives in for the abalone opener when there is 7 months in the season. Now I know why!

Newport has a killer port with lots of parking, cleaning stations and to top it off when you pull your boat out of the water the Rogue river brewery is right there.  Cant beat that.  One of my favorite breweries.  Join the Rogue natrion if you havnt already.  You got to do the Oregon Tuna Classic out Nerwport.  Lots of fun and good people.  It has already been said, but you have a great port for chasing albies as well as occasionally hooking a yellowtail, dorado or bluefin if you go offshore regulary.

It will be an fun change.

Oh yeah, there are many lakes on the 101 driving up there from Humboldt.  You have lots of cool oportunities to catch chrome up there.

You can always fish for Rocks and Lings out of Depoe or at Pacific City. You're gonna love it! Congrats on the new move and welcome to the PNW! Let me know if you ever get out to my neck of the woods in Hooterville (Hood River).

My friend took us with them at their timeshare by Depot Bay Or and as always I travel with either a fishing pole and crab nets.  We went to newport one morning behind one of the store by their wharf and loaded up on Dungees.  Every pull was loaded.  Back to the hotel and it was one of the best breakfast I've had.
You are gonna be busy there harvesting buddy! :smt003
