I pretty sure most AI'er have seen the Catalina trip video from the
Hobie forum. Has anyone done an expedition trip with their AI?
Is there any other cool remote place in Ca (besides Catalina) to
sail-fish-camp? Fl AI'er are lucky to have the Everglades.

Might be cool to do a downwinder from Shelter Cove covering the whole Lost Coast area......

There is a group of islands on a west heading out from the Gate. Very mysterious. Usually spoken about in hushed tones. Somewhat dangerous with lots of "friendly" critters around them.

They are there. Just over the horizon. Another world. If only there was a place to land...

Has anyone planted the AI flag???

Somebody will be first to circle the south island and return.

Thanks for the thoughts.

I'm dreaming... AI expedition in the PI, with over 7000 island with 80deg average sea water temp and a variety of tropical game fish.   If I can only take my AI with me.

So far, Catalina still stands out.

That's the problem around here. Our "Catalina Island" is a sharkfest.

I will admit that I actually thought it might be doable for a group of AI's with a PB escort along for the journey.

The video at around the 4:30 to 5:30 minute mark changes my opinion though...

I don't think you could ever get the permits to camp on the Farallones. I've heard researches even have a hard time getting permission to set foot on the islands. Cruising the Lost Coast would be awesome!
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

Lino,

How about the Channel Islands?  They have camp grounds and fishing is great.  PI would be the best though.  Island hopping from Batangas to Boracay would be fun.  They have Hobie sail racing there too.

The Lost Coast run would be great for fishing.

I'm not good at downwind sailing. The few times I've been in that situation it doesn't seem to work well because the sail works best for more perpendicular type applications (ie. more east/west with our prevailing NW coastal winds).

This dude obviously knows how to sail. Watch that bungie he has attached to the back end of his ama. Pretty slick how he attaches that for the more downwind leg. Great idea. Just have to find the right length cord.

Thanks MW for sharing the vids. I love the bungee idea. I may have to try that tomorrow. Lost Coast... I have not been yet. Cool way to explore for the 1st time a popular spot. This is interesting. Hope to see a hookup soon.

I remember the first time I turned the boat to sail downwind and thought it would be a piece of cake. Comedy of errors with the sail flapping helplessly and the boat barely moving.

That downwind sailing video is a keeper. Still have to angle the boat, but not those wider, time-wasting sweeps back and forth.

Tailwalk, thanks for that great San Luis Reservoir striper fishing article you posted on the other thread. Very informative. And sorry for the minor thread jack here. It might have been a little off topic. I just hate to start a bunch of AI posting threads on the Hobie Kayak forum.

No worries, MW. It's all about sharing; and to me it does not matter if it's off topic. I put it as a casual conversation online.

It's fun learning the art and technique of sailing. Nice to have the mirage drive, huh.

I tried the bungee idea. It works but ChuckE came up to something that's pretty similar. The cord is looped in the ama handle. It also works great. I guess it's a matter of personal preference.

You probably don't want to mix adventure islands and a single regular yak....we would end up waiting all the time, especially if the wind was even halfway up. However, you could probably get enough regular yaks to do it

Late June to early July the YFT get pretty close to shore at the East Cape. Well within AI range. You don't need bait to catch them also. Cedar plugs work great. Pretty easy to hire a panga guide/support boat also. Warm water, great food and beer and pelagics. What more could you want. The Lost Coast and Big Sur would be cool but not that many places to land if things went bad and the surf can be gnar.
