I had to sell my 01 f250 7.3l as a result of the same.  I could not even just sell it legally because it needed a smog.  I let a guy fix it and after he fixed it he gave me 2500.  I probably could have got 7500 for it but the cost of fixing it was an unknown.  The guy was able to make it work because he had a mechanic working for him.    Sad to see it go.

Diesel owners caused this one...  :smt044 Modifications are the norm. When you blow the car next to you full of smoke and close down an intersection due to a huge black cloud... Someone is going to notice :smt005 The test is easy to pass if your Mods are listed on the smogcheck.ca.gov web site... If not :smt010 Back to stock. If it isn't modified, no problem. The money, we all smog our cars, just now diesel owners do too. Sorry your pissed off but 1500 hp ford f350 trucks belching soot and unburnt propane at 200 db are a thing of the past... :smt006

The cabriolet's been smoked out with the top down at a stoplight before...hasn't it  :smt002 :smt003

I think this is more the result of the state finding a previouisly untaxed population base that they can now milk.  Had my truck tested in december.  VISUAL under the hood inspection, VISUAL exhaust inspection and one that they hook to the ecu.  At present, if you did mod the guts out of it you just return to the factory tune before you smog and roll coal out of the smog shop parking lot.

Not all counties in California have to smog. They included diesel only into the counties that already have smog fees. If I remember right, register your vehicle to a P.O. Box in calaveras county and never pay smog again. There is also a couple other counties without smog laws

We only have to smog on sale in Humboldt.  No annual or bi-annual smog requirements or whatever it is that you valley and bay area folk have to do.

Damn.....we suck.

Is it even possible to register to another county?  As the registered owner, my city/county of residence will not change.

Plumas County doesn't have biannual smog either.

I don't think it's a way to tax people because when you pay a shop to do a smog check they get the money, not the state.  I figure it's more a case of state air resource board bureaucrats needing *something* to regulate, anything in order to justify their existence.

I actually work at a Post Office here in Calaveras County. They really put their foot down up here verifying your physical address up here. Gotta have a few different "proofs" where you live. Have to renew and re-show a current address verification annualy.

But when you sell a vehicle up here even to someone in the same county, it has to be re-smogged

I'm not sure this a fair characterization of all diesel owners.   (not me for sure).  My truck was stock with the exception of a better air filter after I lost the first engine to dust.

If you have a check engine light, no pass.   It turns out one of the bugs was from the torque converter.  Im not sure that a bug in the torque converter that is working well will effect emissions  There are a lot of gross polluters on the road everyday.   When will they disappear?

Ha! Yes I've been smoked in the cabriolet Tote. I do 2-3 diesel smogs a day. I get 1 out of ten w/o mods on it. Some legal some not... Torque converter problems can change shift points and high RPM Soot. It was a generalization about Diesel owners all modifying them Morgan. That being said. Get at least an intake kit for yours!!!! (smog legal of coarse)  :smt044 :smt044 The penalties for registering out of area can result in loss of vehicle and criminal charges of fraud with intent to circumvent FEDERAL EPA LAWS. (A federal felony) The state is checking and prosecuting on this and every thing else to get cash. Don't open that door.... It's not that big of a deal... Get it smogged and enjoy the California clear air and lower pollution (air) then Detroit and LA... :smt006
Oh, gross polluters are going off the road fast... DMV won't give out extensions anymore. Now it falls to local police to pull over and tow off unregistered vehicles. Call your local police and supply License # and location of vehicle. they respond 2% of the time. Bigger fish to fry. I guess it doesn't bring enough cash in to make it worth their while.

My understanding is that counties that tested low for air quality problems (like up here in mendo) weren't required to have all the smog regulations.

It's pretty well known that air quality in California has really improved in the last 20 years, especially in LA.  When I was in Peru and Columbia, where those kind of regs would just get you a laugh at the bar, the air in some cities was unbelievably bad.  Like you couldn't wait to get out of there.  I'm with Weimarian on this one.  Clean air = good.

Up here in Mendo, we have a different kind of air quality problem:  I was checking out the surf the other day at a lookout over Big River Beach where all the stoners hang out.  They must have been sampling some "put you in the hospital" stuff, because after standing there for 10 minutes or so, trying to decide whether or not to paddle out, I realized I was getting pretty buzzed just from the second hand smoke.  One of the many benefits of mendo-land :smoke
