So, what is the mondo stealth, black taped down, velcro-held, camoed, max survival, swat-quality  pfd of choice?  Know anybody wearing something that matches that description?  Anybody who thinks they do?  Pictures?

Small craft, big ocean and half assed boaters.......I'd go with mondo visibility over camo stealth.

Patagonia is making one that pretty much sounds like what you've described. It's got a buckled front, pockets, and is dark olive green. Also, Extrasport is making some angler PFDs with a bunch of pockets that come in a couple of lighter green colors. I think both of these are in the NRS catalog.

After reading and lurking on various boards, today I went with an Extrasport Retroglide purchased with my new Hobie Adventure.   However, I am curious if there is anything significantly better out there.  Comments?

I agree with Art - be visible.

I have red and  yellow PFDs, precisely for the visibility factor.  I'm even considering a flag like the trailer bikes or recumbent bikes use.  A little bit of chop and PBs can't see us till they're right on top.  Remember the 50-foot Stagnaro boat doing the kayak slalom at Davenport two years ago?

If anything scares the fish it's our silhouettes against the sky when we get to close to them, not the color of our PFD's. I don't think camos going to change that.  If you really want to try a steath color  try sky blue.
If you want to be seen by boaters while your on the water--as Allen said--stick to yellow and red.
Where I've found color makes a deference in all my years of fishing is in the color of my lure.
Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.

Take it from a color blind guy. Yellow stands out the best!

I chose a yellow Extrasport Retroglide pfd.

The thread was hoping to elicit information and opinions about what is the best, baddest, most useful pfd on the planet.  thoughts?

Thanks.

for what its worth, in the past 10 years I've used & abused an extrasport Sabre, an extrasport Mona Lisa, and recently upgraded to the extrasport retroglide Sabre. Of the 3, I think I was most happy with the Mona Lisa, but overall the extrasport brand is tried & true. I really like the new retroglide strap system, however my main problem with the new sabre is the thickness of the back panel, it doesn't work as well with a highback seat as the thinner paneled PFD's do. I guess that's why I got mine as a sale item, and this month in Canoe & Kayak magazine I saw a "new product" the retroglide sabre vest with new "mesh back". Now I want one of those too! :smt012

Actually I don't own a yak yet, but i think it's okay to put the PFD before the horse?!

I have worked out a seat adjustment that makes the Extrasport Retroglide comfortable, though the back flotation is bulky.

Now I am considering a fishing vest worn over the pfd to get a better storage system for survival gear, camera, etc.  Thoughts?

IMO: skip the vest - just get a PFD with lot's of pockets. I have the Lotus PFD with the mesh back. Has two large pockets on each side - enought to keep the essentials  :smt002

My Pentax optio camera fits in too.
