I think you'll need to contact a big post office.  I know there's one in SF that can do them.  My local main post office in Santa Cruz can do them as well.  Can't recall for sure, but I thnk there's an express option you can choos to get in done quicker than normal, but I seem to remember it's costly ($180) I would say try calling your local post office and see what they recommend.

Rob u just mist passport day 2012, offering same day aervice.

How tight are you with your congressional rep?  Thats a pretty nifty shortcut for some.

I renewed my passport by mail by paying expedited handling through the National passport center.  Recall something like 10 day turnaround.  For expeditedt you need a date certain for travel, ithink.

There are also services that you can. Pay for something like two or three day turnaround.

You can download the forms online. I think its a 140 for renewal. Then get a new pic for your passport. Take the whole mess to the post office. Then turn it over to them. If you want to expedite its more money. 4-6 weeks for the regular time.

Think if you turn in your old one, it speeds up the process.

I used to run down to the SF passport office for same day turnaround (no appointment).  That was before biometric passports though...

If you have verifiable proof (trip itinerary) that you need a passport quickly, you can call the 800 number. You will be directed to go to the passport office (nearest one to me is in SF).

Last year, there was a last minute requirement for passports for my tuna trip. I went to the passport office on Thursday, waited hours in line to be processed within minutes, with proof of urgency, and had to return the next day (travel day) to pick up the new document. Trip started on Saturday.

If you do go to a passport office, go early and be aware that security is very strict, like dealing with the TSA at the airport. I had a pocket knife on me and had to go to the end of the line after disposing of it. **Luckily, I retrieved the knife after leaving the building.**

And...once the fishing trip started, the Mexican navy never checked for passports.  :smt013

A note on security... If the passport agency is anything like Customs and Immigration security, it is best to leave your cell phone in the car.  I went to USCIS last year and they wouldn't let me in with my cell phone, nor would they hold it for me.  I ditched my cell phone in the bushes outside (car was 5 min walk away and I didn't want to be late for our appointment).  When we were finished with our interview we went outside.. USCIS security had confiscated the phone and refused to return it to me.
