I’m curious because I planned on fishing many different counties this yr with my new toy. It could get pretty pricey if I have to buy county tags for Fresno,Kings, Tulare, Madera, SLO, & Santa Barbara counties. I know boats with motors have to have registration but I figured it is like the tags on my truck State wide. The tag Kern county wants is for all county waterways. Is this normal or just a Kern county thing?
The other problem is they said it is based off the serial number on the Kayak could someone please tell me where this is located as I bought this used and the previous owner knew nothing about the tags being needed for our county. I have a 2009 15' O.K. Prowler.

Thanks
Jeff

I go to Santa Clara county all the time you pay a launch fee and inspection fee.  I have ever heard of registration fee.

Good To know! state regs say nothing about needing registration on a yak!

Yes mine is still human powered, that was the reason for buying it lol its my new work out program since I told the wife I was not going to the gym anymore.

So Ill just play stupid anytime I'm on my home county waters

News to me!  I do know that if you mount a motor to it, then state of CA. is going to want it to be registered as a motor vehicle, and of corse, get their cut of the $ for it.

As for the serial number, can't help you with the location on your yak, but on my OB, it's located on at the back, portside, on the bottom of the hull near the rudder.  My OB's serial number is hard to read, I had to smear mud all around the area to "Highlight" the number.  Someone here will know exactly where your yaks serial number is located.

Sounds fishy, I've never heard of registration tags for a yak (only vessel ID numbers if you're running an electric trolling motor)...I'd ask for a different clerk or for them to show you the reg.

Kern Co. has a 'boating fee' for their lakes. Daily or $60. annual charge. Maybe that's what the clerk was talking about. A lot of places require kayaks to pay for launching & fishing but they just want the money and don't care about serial #'s.

Its a $30 annual fee for kayaks, canoes and aluminum boats without motors for any county wide water ways.

They told me the registration for my yak is the serial #

Just seems odd no other counties require the same!!!!

Then let's move this thread to Politics and out of public view.  Don't want to give cash strapped counties any ideas. . .
