I am not in favor for fixed mount since I am totally new to kayak world.  I don't want to drill too many holes on my very first & new girlfriend.   :smt003 Actually I want the rod right next to me. I just knew I will not able to paddle well since rod holder will be in my way.

So I researched a lot for something that I can move back or forth. I found a nice one, gear trac @ http://www.yakattack.us. However it is expensive and too short for me. $42 for 16".

After hours of looking around in the store and Internet, I finally found one that I really like and it was very good deal. At OSH, it was $11 for 48" long and I was able to cut in halves to make it two 48". It is Gladiator Garageworks Geartrack Channel. Look at the first two pictures.

I am almost done with this project. Only last part I need to do is to rivet it in. Before I do this, I want your feedback. Do you think it is a doable or should I ditch them in the trash? Anything that I need to know?

Just curious, how would you keep the rod right next to you if you were trolling?  I have to reach for the rods on both my yaks and it is not a problem, just an inconvenience.  Drill, drill, drill----I know I sound like a Republican----sorry!

I think it is a fine idea but the spot you are showing it in the foot well looks troublesome. I think that spot would be good for other accessories like a GPS or radio mount though.

Here are two more pictures. It shows what it looks like if I move the rod holder far end and back near where I sit. Sliding mount is about 25" long. So I figure that if I am trolling, I can move the rod to middle area or where ever I will feel comfortable. Only thing that I realized it may not comfortable is my legs. I probably will need an extender. Not sure yet..

As an FYI: There is always this options for rails if others want to do the same thing. They are Trident replacement rails and all you would have to remove is the foot braces.

$19.99 for a pair

Pair it with one of these it will raise it up away from your feet and you can maneuver it to any position that is comfortable. Plus it will get the butt of the rod up far enough not have any clearance issues with the kayak.

:smt001 Not too sure about that but let us know. I like the idea of being able to move it but that location looks like it will cause more hassel then not. The rocket launcher rod holders are gonna be the way to go for sure.

Looks like a slick mount option, use of the rocket launcher would make it work great. Nice job and HEAVY duty to boot!!!
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Hey all

I am sorry for not following up on this. I have received several PM about it so I gotta post the result. I simply love it. I can adjust or remove the rod holder easily. It cost me very little $$. Just be careful with rivet gun, the mount will be chipped if it is being hit hard.

I hope to go out kayakfishing with you all soon.

I am interested in a few details about your sliding track.

I have an Ocean Kayak Malibu Two SL and want to mount tracks like yours to the top of the side rails.  It sounds like you used revits.  I am looking at using stainless bolts and nuts held in a backing block.

What is the details for your mount and hardware on you scotty mounts.

What paint did you use to color it black.

Thanks
tcroxton

One thing you need to be aware of with the gear head extender is that it will create a lot of torque, I had two on my PA's side rails and I got rid of them as I did not like how they were moving the side rails because of their length.

Looks sweet.
Your original post was a little confusing at first (just a typo). You stated you bought a 48'' track, cut it in half to give you two 48'' tracks. I'm pretty sure you meant to type two 24'' tracks.
I agree that the mount Scotty Gear Head Mount would act like a fulcrum and put a lot of pressure where the rail is attached to the kayak.
I like the idea from the standpoint that the rod would be out of the way, but too much stress IMO.
Decide what works best for you and go with it.

I have never used it with rails but have used it both on my OK's and Cobra and never have had any issues. I ususally don't run them like the manufacture picture but more like what is shown in my picture below. I use it more to elevate and have the ability to rotate. This will alleviate your fulcrum point issues as the rod/reel is still basically centrally located over the attachment point.

No, it is two tracks on a 48". I cut on the other side. Look at the picture.

Thanks for some tips. I can always do some modification when I feel it is necessary.
