Usually you gotta be a member of the IGFA to view records but the database is open for viewing, not sure how long its gonna last.
Time to check up on all those breakable records.

Sweet, the smallfry (under 10 yrs old) record for lingcod is only 14 lb 8oz.  My son Owen has almost 10 yrs to break that.

The all tackle record for black rockfish is 13 lb 5 oz, which is a bit hard to believe given that the next nearest record for that fish is 9 lb 9 oz.  I always wanted to look at these records but didn't want to pay for it.

Awesome... thanks for the heads up Art... how's about going after that 36# sturgeon on 2 lb line... or an 82 pounder on 8 lb line... I think we can do it. :smt002

Also, I see the all tackle record for vermillion rockfish is 12 lbs... That's a big 'un but not unthinkable.

I also see one of my customers in the database for is 73# blue catfish on 12# line.  I'm currently working on the rod that hopefully will get him another spot in the record books.

Thanks again... I've been wanting to have a peek at that for a long time.

Does anyone know if there are any rules about the type of boat you catch your fish in.  There's a world of difference between catching a big fish in a kayak on light test relative to trying to catch one from shore or a regular boat.  The "nantuket sleigh ride" we get in our kayaks will actually wear down a large fish without putting that much stress on the rod and line.  If there aren't any rules prohibiting kayaks (and I can't imagine that they thought of this), I'm guessing kayaks are probably the best method of catching IGFA record fish.

I like how the 30 lb line class record for black rockfish is at 4 lbs and the smallfry record is 9 lbs. =)
After fishing with 2 lb line, 6 lb feels like 20 and 8lb feels like thirty.......those sturgeon records look doable.  Too bad I only hook one every 5 years =(

I'm gonna join this year,I don't think I can let some of these records stand and still call myself a fishermen.  I'm considering gettin my daughter in on it too, that wussy 16 lb halibut in san diego will be history.

And if that doesn't work I can always go after the most obscure....AT kingfish is about 2 lbs and starry flounder is 8lbs =).....checked for anchovy, sardine and jacksmelt but the IGFA seems to have snubbed their noses at that category =)

Brian, I agree completely.  You can definitely get a better light tackle advantage with your kayak acting as your primary drag.

Copper Rockfish is 7lb 4 oz... do-able...

White sturgeon on 4# line is 50 lbs... that's the one to target next year...

I searched the ever popular Tred Barta...you OLN watchers will know what I'm talking about.  The loud-mouthed (L)east Coaster actually has an impressive list of records.  Doin' it the "Barta Way!"

I can't see there being any special disposition for kayaks.  Heck, many of the light tackle line class records for marlin were done  by large boats running down fish on the initial take and gaffing them green in a matter of a few minutes.  I can't believe the "gear" comes into play that much in that scenario.  It's more a matter of boat handling and a crew that's good and quick on the gaffs.
