My ram ball mounts came with back up plates to go inside the kayak. I looked on Scotty's site and didn't see them for the Scotty ones I want to install. Does anybody know if they make them or can suggest something else to make them out of? Thanks, jim

Here's a thread from a few years back...a solution that worked for Jedmo.

1/4" starboard.  I raid the scrap bin at Tap plastic like a hoarder every chance I get.  PM me your address and how big of a piece you need and I'll drop some in the mail.

Jim, I made mine out of 1/4" aluminum plate. Got the aluminum cheap from a local metal scrap yard. It was like $3/lb. You can make 4 to 6 out of one plate. Got a couple laying around. PM me if you want them.

I use an old stop sign I had laying around. I drill the hole/screw holes, then make a cardboard template to fit the underside, and cut and bend the 1/8" aluminum to fit. Works great.

good thing I came across this thread before installing my first scotty mount.  I saw the older thread by Jedmo, using what looks to be a piece of aluminum plate.  I don't have many tools to cut aluminum/metals, so does anyone know where I would be able to find a small piece like that?  I have drills and everything else, but no means to cut any metals neatly.

I recommend a cheap cutting board.  Very easy to cut and more than sturdy enough to get the job done.

Metals, starboard, etc. are all nice ideas, but overkill, and not nearly as easy to obtain as a cutting board.

Use stainless hardware. My kayak has a few non stainless that came with the used boat. All of the nuts on the inside were rusty and crumbled when I checked them. Aluminum or cutting board makes a good backing plate. I have no backing on mine and I hang a 4 lb DR ball from one. No problems, yet.

Cutting boards are usually hdpe just like starboard, I pay anywhere between a buck to ten depending on the size.....mostly closer to a buck. Way cheaper than cutting boards if you have access to it.

If anyone needs some let me know, I'll go through my stash and drop by Tap if I don't have what you need.

+1 on the cheap white plastic cutting board. Really tough stuff and will hold even self tapping style screws.  It holds up to all those knife cuts.  Got that from Cajun...Thanks worked great.

Hmmmm......the self tapping ss screws into the piece of starboard sounds like a good idea. Where these suckers mount is extremely difficult for me to reach thru the 8" center hatch and get a washer & nut started on a bolt.

Art nice avatar! Did you and Tote get some signs made up?

Would be sweet but no signs for me unfortunately, love me some old school neon. Tote made the avatar for for me.

I believe he's flirting with the idea of getting one for his bar though.
