This afternoon I took a walk on the pier to see what was out there. About half way down I noticed that the water was black I looked up and saw no clouds, as I watched the shadow I began to see bait fish boiling and relized it was a bait ball the size of a football field. I ran home and grabbed some rods. By the time I got back the bait had moved down but I still managed about forty 3 to 5 inch anchovys most of them were 3 to 4 inches. I used live bait and got no takers but atleast I have some fresh anchovys when the swell comes down. I spoke to some people on the pier and they said there was alot of bait this morning. I might try to get some more bait tomarrow morning. It is hard to believe that there is that much bait and no fish I could see bait balls from the pier to muscle rock.

John, Taylor  I am trying to set something up for Thursday myself. Let me know what you guys think. Thursday looks good if there is not wind.

plan without me, I rarely flake on a weekend, weekday is entirely different story.

If I do it, I'm coming over for the afternoon, say launch 3-4, land 7 or something.
wind might be up.  if it's up and I can still fish, I'll look to steal Bill's hawg out from
under him @ steven's creek.  :smt003

I'll pm...

Hey I can fish on Thursday. My whole salmon season looks to have changed, I made an agreement this morning to work a ranch up by Chico starting on Sunday through the summer, so I may not get too many days to fish salmon this season.

I can remember fishing off the pier when i was a kid and seeing that very thing happen.  It was soooo cool.  Huge dark school of bait moved under the pier.  We had salmon right on the surface chasing bait. Was the first time i ever caught a salmon from "shore".
That same day got to see a drunk guy hook a huge striper- broke the rod, but not the line, he continues to reel it in, breaks the line, but it catches in the broken rod tip and he gets hold of it- -and ties the line back together (i'm serious) -- he reels a while, and finally ends up handlining the monster into a crab net.  Ended up being 35+ lbs...

Steve I have fished many a day on that pier and have seen way too many drunk people too.  I can't beat that story but I have seen people cut other peoples lines while reeling in fish.  And I have even watched a man throw another man's gear over the side. Oh  the good ol days.

I'm looking for a good chance at salmon tomorrow, and LM looks pretty good.  I've got the whole day free, so am looking to head out early.  Taylor, anyone else interested?

WHen I was younger I had a guy hook a salmon and his freind ran down the side of the pier cutting peoples lines. The guy fishing next to me almost got into a fist fight with them. The strangest thing that I ever saw was a drunk guy wadle down the pier in fins and a snorkle and jump off of the end, he just floated around then decided to swim in.That was a risk, one of my fishing freinds called me one time and told me there was a 18 foot white shark chasing a seal under the pier.

The "drunk guy on the pier" story reminded me of a day when salmon were reported off the Goleta pier in SoCal. A mob scene ensued the next morning and a guy who was puttin' away the coors decided to overhead cast to get more distance and bam! hookup! Except it was with another guy's forehead.
A friend of mine who was a ranger at the park helped the injured fisherman with a 3oz prism krocodile as an impromptu forehad piercing to the emergency room. A half hour later the guy came walking back with a bandaid on his face, ready to fish the rest of the day. Talk about fired up for fishing! After that I always steered clear of beer guzzlers with 10ft surf rods and salmon lures!

Yeah surfing next to the peers can be dangerous as well.  We would constantly be fighting with the guys when i surfed next to the pismo peer.  Usually i would wait till they werent looking, take thier line over to a pillar and wrap it!..    only for the a-holes ofcourse!.  :smt004
