Hey hey,

I've been prowling around this and similar sites for 6 months now and I thought it was about time I join the fray.  I starrted to kayak about a 2 years ago while living in the SF bay area, but have since moved to Lake Tahoe.  I wanted to get back into fishing and thought this looked like a pretty cool way to do it.  Bought my first yak late last season, and got it rigged up in time for labor day weekend.  This weekend at Tahoe was simply outstanding with hardly a ripple on the lake and I got to do some recon on saturday with the fish finder.  Launched from Cave Rock (10am) and explored that area and about 3 miles north to Glenbrook.  Found the goods down anywhere from 180ft to 230ft depending on the local.  I grew up fishing walleye, bass, pike, etc. in the midwest so this type of fishing is new to me so any suggestions are always welcome.  Will likely start by jigging deep and trolling more shallow water in the early morning.  Also plan on exploring the many reserviors in the area from here to lake Almanour for smallies, bows, and browns.  I have never dipped my line in the salt yet, at least not from a kayak, but you never know.  Thats it for now.  You all seem like a fun crew so i hope to cross paths sometime.

My ride as she looks now... (assuming I get the pictures to post)

Welcome to the board.

Nice rig. Is that a ram mount for the ff and gps?

Nice Rig Nice Boot. What section of Tahoe do you live in?
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Thanks,

Alfredo:
Ya I used three Ram mounts up front: 2 of the smaller mounts for the ff and gps and 1 larger mount for the forward rod holder.  I liked how the Ram rod holder sits up high and I can position it well so that it won't interfere with my stroke.  The round Ram mounts are a bit wider than the channel molded into the Tarpon forward console (its the perfect width for the scotty mount) so I back-plated the two smaller mounts with a little aluminum so that they would clear the channel.  Thought this would look better than grinding the round mounts to fit.  Now however, they make ram mounts the same width as the Scotty so you wouldn't have to do this.  Oh, well... found this out alittle to late.  I went with Scotty mounts in the back since the rod sits at about he right height to reach easily and I liked the fact that I could interchange the Scotty anchor attachment with a rod holder.  Also, Ram makes a ball now that will fit into the Scotty holder so the combinations are limitless.  I found the small back hatch on the Tarpon perfect size for my anchor and I Marine gooped down a fixture on the hull to keep it from moving around in rough water or if I flip.

you can jig for mackinaw in lake tahoe but the trophy's are the rainbows and browns.. try trolling a countdown rapala on light line [6lb] around the perimeter of the lake.  boca resevoir offers easy pickings, but they are the small planter type.

Thanks for the tip cpkayak:

Any particular size or color pattern you recommend?  I have a small side plane that might be perfect for this.

Welcome aboard.
I live in Placerville and frequent Lake Tahoe quite a bit. Be careful going from Cave Rock towards Glenbrook. If the wind picks up you will be paddling against it the entire way back. That happened to me a couple of years back in my Tarpon 160. It was so bad I couldn't paddle directly back to Cave Rock. I had to paddle towards the middle of the lake, straight into the wind, PAST Cave Rock, then turn around and head in. It was the only time I wish I had a rudder.
I think I am scheduled to be up there in a couple of weeks. Want to hook up for some fishing?

Welcome to the board!  Sweet setup.  Being one of the only guys on the board living in Tahoe, I'd say be prepared for 459 instant "best friends!"  (count me as one for sure.....love to yak fish that lake)

i read an article some years ago by a guy that used his canoe for tahoe, fallen leaf lake, and other lakes in that area.  His technique for Tahoe was to get a minnow trap, set it up and go  troll lures for a while.  when he got live bait, he'd trol the lake edges out to like 40 feet with the minnows.

the article was very exciting and he said he catches lots of big trout this way.... this was on the other side of the lake closer to emerald Bay.  I guess things would be the same on Nev side?

Anyway, welcome, keep us posted on your techniques and succeses.

Nice boot.

Allen

I'm pretty sure the guy scallen is thinking of is Mark Wiza, http://www.fishsniffer.com/wiza/index.html. Lots of good stuff for you here.  I just got my yak last summer and use it for Stripers in San Pablo Bay mostly, but I'll be up in Tahoe for a week in August (Agate Bay).  Maybe we could hook up then.  In the meantime, good luck!

I was just going through those Wiza articles myself - maybe Tahoe would be a good spot for a NCKA tourney/group trip.  There's a group camp at D.L. Bliss State Park and a great beach to access Rubicon Bay, Emerald Bay, etc.

Marin:
That sounds like a great idea.  From the CA parks site...

"CAMPING RESERVATIONS D.L. Bliss family
campground is on the reservation system from
6/17/05 to 9/17/05. The group campground is
reservable from 6/17/05 to 9/17/05. Camping may
be available for a few weeks after the
reservation season; call ahead for
confirmation. You may make camping
reservations up to seven months and no
less than 48 hours in advance by calling
1-800-444-7275 (TTY 1-800-274-7275)."

Not sure if its just first come first serve before 6/17?  I could call and see if we have some interest...

Wonder if this idea should be reposted someplace more appropriate... Think this link is drying up.
