Launched at 6:45 with Chris "Noeatum" in his Prowler 13from the beach at MNK.

I checkled the hotel beach on the way dowm but the surf looked a bit gnarly and opted for the easy launch at MBK.

We paddled out under gray skies with a slight South wind.  Made it over to the hotel after a couple little rock cod stops by the can buoy. (all rockfish released)

No takedowns from halibut, we tried big herring, squid, and i trolled a grid pattern with a dodger and hoochie streaming Butt Juice.  No Joy.

On the way beack we did a few big drifts near the buoy from 110 ft to about 55 feet.  A couple barely legal lings (released), as the wind swithced to NW and increased to about 12  kts.

Finally we went in around noon.  Great day on the water with a fine companion.

Gotta break this flattie flat spell soon!

Perhaps we need to hire a flattie-caller?

Sounds like they just are not there in any numbers yet as it would appear you looked pretty darn hard!

Thanks for the report, Allen.

I gotta figure that if you didn't find the flatties they're just not there yet.

I've never launched from the hotel as it usually looks a little "gnarly" to me.  Have you launched there often?

Allen,
Morgan and I floated this track on Friday, no luck.  I went to the grid Mooch caught his halibut at last year and drifted over it a bunch, there was a bunch of rock fish action, but no halibut.  I feel a little better that a bunch of guys have gone out and not found any halibut yet.  I guess Pat is better at this fishing stuff.

Or the fishing fairies are teasing us by offering up the one halibut to me and then holding the others back?......I guess I need to get to sleep......... :smt006

That's pretty awesome, Ed.  You'll have to show me how to do that one of these days.  I really appreciate you posting because there is a great reluctance from some people to post stuff like that, which is understandable.  I think it has the potential to be a huge advantage to the members of this site.  Now all we need are little fish icons where fish get hooked!

Spoke with a spear fisherguy yesterday (couldn't go out, it was too sunny and my daughter needed some park time).

He said he speared a nice halibut off of Steamer lane on Saturday.  Saw one other flattie but didn't get the chance to spear it.

That gets me all sweaty-palmed and jittery.  May is usually when the season starts and I'm SO ready for it!

Allen I save all my tracks to a garmin program called Mapsource.  I think Magellan has similar programs.  I am looking for better programs and I think I have one that can do any gps type and put the track on a satelite photo and only costs 50 dollars.  I will tell you how it works out.  The company even has a freeware version that allows you to at least share way points between people with different GPSs.   After I have the track in the program I use a snipping program that saves the screen as a JPG and then I can attach it to the post.

Steamer Lane is the surfing area near the brick lighthouse in West Santa Cruz, many surfers will be glad to hear you don't know where it is!

That general area, tho not right in the surfing lane, is good for rockfish and the halibut that feed on them.
