I'm going to make one out of PVC but was wondering what diameter should the pipe be. Is 1" ok or should I go 1 1/4". Thanks

How many kayaks are you storing? Do you plan on moving it around?

1 1/4"is the right size in my opinion.  I experimented with 1" when I first decided to make a stand and realized immediately that it was just too flexible to do the job.  1 1/4" works great.  Mine is simply two rectangles, one slightly smaller than the other that are bolted together and fastened with wing nuts.  It folds flat for storage and unfolds easily.  I used 3 nylon webbing straps to form the "cradle".  The larger rectangle is 68" X 38".  The smaller one is just small enough to fit inside the larger one if layed flat.  It will fit in the bed of a pick-up or the back of my Subaru Outback.

I don't think my post will help.  My stand isn't for storage.  I use it for cleaning and the occasional pimping job.

Ya.. I'm kind of moving away from the PVC thing. I love the work Craig does with his stands but dont have the cash. I'm thinking of some sort of pulley system to get them up a little easier.  Thanks for the help and anymore info is welcome.

I bought this rack when they had it at costco online. It works great for me.

That's a cool rack. I think I have an idea. I found two sets of old playground bike racks. I think with a little angle and flat iron and my neighbors arc welder, I might be able to make some magic happen. Will post pics when done, even if it doesn't work.

Good luck on the diy project.  I bought 2 heavy duty plastic storage shelves from Home Depot on sale for $40 each. The shelves are spaced 6' apart.  It stores 3 yaks (the widest going on top w/ straps, and remaining two fitting in the shelf openings), and leaves me with plenty room to store fishing gear.

For those still interested in a PVC stand ( single ) they have plans on the Hook 1 website.
Made with 1-1/4" PVC, I keep my Outback on it all year, works great.
Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

I use a pair of cheap plastic saw horses.  I put some eye bolts in the end and it holds my boat just fine.

You can always fill the PVC with Great Stuff. That'll strengthen it.
