If the guys in Florida can catch Tarpoon on a fly, there is no reason why a ling can't go down on one!  Good luck and post a story when you do!

Those weighted flies in the vermillion colors look deadly!
I can't wait to see a report.

I actually had a better-than-average year for lings in 2011, including some kelp greenling. Some of the flies I used are the olive ones in the photos below. The fish photos are from 2010. Those lings took clousers that were lighter in color but still plenty of olive.

Sometimes they are not in very deep water, which makes it a little easier with a fly rig. I caught several this year in water less than 30'.
Thanks for the photos.
Bill

When I was on Kodiak in 2008 with some of the folks from the Alaska Flyfishers, they were fishing for lings with flies.  They were targeting them off the bottom, in 100'-135'. But they wound up having to do what I'd consider "cheating", by using a 1 oz twist on sinker, on top of the flies that had the largest lead eyes available, along with lead wire wrapped around the hook, and mono running line tied directly to 30' of T14.

The biggest fish caught on a fly was a ~10 pound ling. Poor thing practically still had milk on its lips (figuratively).

What was a lot more fun, was to get over a school of Blacks or Duskys, and get the school to come to the surface by using conventional tackle to get their attention, and then targeting them with the fly rods.
